JUDITH MCCAFFREY RECOGNIZED AS MAJOR DONOR BY THE ROTARY FOUNDATION
President Chris Baxter recognized Judith McCaffrey as a Major Donor Level 1 of The Rotary Foundation.
As a Major Donor, Judith’s significant financial contributions support and honor the humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation that make a difference in the lives of others.
Judith joined Rotary in 1995, served as Club President in 1999-2000, District 5240 Group 8 Representative, chaired golf tournament for a number of years, and served in many leadership capacities over her 22 years of service to the club. She has participated in numerous projects including Rotary’s polio National Immunization Days in Ghana and India, humanitarian projects in Mexico, as well as service to our local community.
When asked why she gives, Judith states, “I give to the Rotary Foundation for Cindy and other little girls and boys like her. In 2001, I traveled to Ghana to participate in the National Polio Immunization Days. Cindy was the first child, baby actually, that I gave those life-saving polio drops. I’ll never forget that moment."
"I saw my donations to the Rotary Foundation Polio Plus program in action that trip and my next trip to India in 2007 and many trips to Mexico for eye surgeries with the club over the years. I was hooked!" she continued.
"Giving is a wonderful feeling! I feel great when I do it. We have so much here in Santa Barbara; we need to give to those who are less fortunate. I encourage club members to give to the Rotary Foundation.”
80 ANIMAL AMBASSADORS GRADUATE FROM PAWS UP FOR PETS PROGRAM
C.A.R.E.4Paws graduated more than 80 young and excited Animal Ambassadors in Santa Barbara County through their Paws Up for Pets program, a new educational initiative that promotes accountability and compassion for animals and empathy in the community as a whole. Paws Up for Pets focuses mainly on children age six through 15 enrolled in afterschool programs. The 80 children who graduated included youth from United Boys & Girls Clubs Lompoc unit, the Chumash Reservation and a Girl Scout troop in Goleta.
The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise recently made a contribution of $1,500 to support Paws Up workbooks, badges, certificates and “Stay Pawsitive” T-shirts for 50 children participating in the program.
President Chris stated, “Sunrise Rotary is thrilled to support C.A.R.E.4Paws’ new, innovative Paws Up for Pets program, which teaches compassion for animals and anti-bullying.”

ROXANNE NOMURA REMEMBERED
Hundreds of friends and family gathered at the Carpinteria High School gymnasium on Saturday, June 17 to remember Roxanne Nomura who died on May 9.
Roxanne was remembered fondly by Les Esposito, Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club, who will "miss her spontaneous giggle," and her real estate colleague, Jeff Farrell, who described Roxanne as having a "genuine understanding of her client's needs and holding the highest degree of ethical standards."
Gary Dobbins, publisher of the Coastal View newspaper, said Roxanne "took her love for others to great heights." Rotary Past District Governors Jane and Jack McClenahan, recalled many memories during their travels together to England, Mexico, South Korea, and Portugal.
Roxanne's sister Carol Takeishi shared stories as a young girl. She spoke of her high energy and entrepreneurial spirit as a Girl Scout. She said Roxanne's friends, colleagues, and Rotarians were very important to her sister.
Wade, Roxanne's husband, met her at 15 and married at 19 years of age. He recalled many touching memories of their more than 48 years together. He said, "she was an angel by my side for 48 years."

DID YOU KNOW?
Regular attendance is essential to a strong and active Rotary club. The emphasis on attendance is traced back to 1922 when Rotary International announced a worldwide attendance contest that motivated thousands of Rotarians to achieve 100 percent attendance year after year. Many Rotarians take great pride in maintaining their 100 percent record in their own club or by making-up at other Rotary club meetings.
Although the bylaws of Rotary require members to attend only 60 percent of all meetings, the custom has emerged that 100 percent is the desirable level. Rotary stresses regular attendance because each member represents his own business or profession and thus the absence of any member deprives the club of the values of its diversified membership and the personal fellowship of each member. From time to time, proposals have been made to give attendance credit for various reasons or to lower the minimum requirement. Such attempts generally have been rebuffed by the clubs acting through the Council on Legislation.
[Update: The 2016 Council on Legislation voted to give Rotary clubs more flexibility regarding attendance. Clubs can ease attendance requirements and encourage members to participate in other ways.]

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 51
When I started the pin challenge at the start of the Rotary year I wanted to feature a different pin each week. I'm breaking that rule this week with this angel pin. It was originally featured in the August 24, 2016 newsletter but I'm bringing it back in memory of Roxanne Nomura. I saw several District Rotarians wearing this pin at Roxanne's memorial service on Saturday. Roxanne loved to make people happy. She was an angel of happiness, angel of good works, angel to her clients, angel to her family and friends, a cookie baking angel, and her husband Wade's angel. I am grateful to have known Roxy.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
