An excerpt from “A Brief History of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary Gala Celebration,” written by Bill Abel. March 6, 2010.
The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise was nudged into existence by a jovial group of well meaning Rotarians from the six clubs of Group 8, Rotary District 524 (now District 5240) on or about December, 1984. Prominent among the founding fathers were Norman Anderson, Jack Cunningham, Fred Allen, Jim Johannsen and, destined to be our first President, Brooke E. Sawyer, Jr.
The group gathered together at what is now the International House of Pancakes (then Turnpike Lodge Restaurant) near highway 101 and Turnpike Road. Rotary International was interested in expanding its membership. Rotary Clubs tended to be territorial, so it was not possible to garner new members from existing territories. With the establishment of breakfast clubs with no territorial boundaries, expansion of Rotary membership was possible. As the weeks passed sufficient new members had been proposed to meet the requirements to form a new Rotary club and the club was chartered on March 6, 1985.
On April 20, 1985, over 250 Rotarians and guests gathered at the Sheraton Hotel in Santa Barbara to celebrate the new club.

Charter member, E. Russell Smith shares a memory:
What first comes to mind is during one of the first potential charter breakfast’s in Goleta at the place where I Hop currently is Mr. Harold Kono, also a potential charter member, asked me if I really wanted to do this. 33 years later I guess the answer was yes.
We honor our twenty-seven charter members for having the foresight and enthusiasm to begin a new Rotary club. We recognize these founding members who helped guide and shape the basis of the club's interests in service to others. Thank you!
MARCH IS MEMBERSHIP MONTH
March is Membership Month, which means it's time to celebrate our Rotary club, our members and the good we do in our community and around the world. It is time to bring new members!
Say it loud, say it proud! I have attached a file containing information about who we are and what we do. Please share with your friends, family members, neighbors and work associates. Let them know about the organization you belong to and invite them to one of our weekly meetings. Let them know what Rotary means to you, how we have pushed Polio to the brink of eradication!
Throughout the month of March the Membership Committee will call you to find out what responses you have had and to offer their support in following up with prospective members.
Jonathan Zaragoza was honored with the La Cuesta Student of the Month award for February 2017. The award is given to students who have demonstrated outstanding academic and personal achievement and who are nominated by their teachers.
Jonathan’s teacher, James Bedard stated, “What separates Jon from everyone else is he puts in the time to make sure he’s done things the right way. It’s been a bumpy road but he has exceeded his required credits.”
Upon accepting the award, Jonathan said, “It is an honor to receive this award. I want to thank my parents and my teachers for not giving up on me.”

FREE DENTAL DAY SERVES SANTA BARBARA'S NEEDIEST RESIDENTS
On Friday, February 24, 2017, the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise partnered with the Eastside Dental Clinic (operated by the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics) to provide Free Dental Day, free oral health treatment services for individuals who cannot afford to pay for major dental work. Root canals and other major dental work was performed to 46 low-income children and adults. X-rays, cleanings, and diagnostic dental needs were held prior to the dental day. Direct Relief donated free dental kits and Sunrise volunteers provided oral hygiene training to patients and families.
Free Dental Day was funded by the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation and a grant from Rotary International District 5240. Chris Tucker is the project manager.
Each summer thousands of young people are selected to attend Rotary sponsored leadership camps or seminars in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, France, Argentina, Korea and numerous other countries. In an informal atmosphere, groups of outstanding young men and/or women spend a week in a challenging program of leadership training, discussions, inspirational addresses and social activities designed to enhance personal development, leadership skills and good citizenship. The official name of this activity is the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program (RYLA).
The RYLA program began in Australia in 1959, when young people throughout the state of Queensland were selected to meet with Princess Alexandra, the young cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. The Rotarians of Brisbane, who hosted the participants, were impressed with the quality of the young leaders. It was decided to bring youth leaders together each year for a week of social, cultural and educational activities. The RYLA program gradually grew throughout all the Rotary districts of Australia and New Zealand. In 1971, the RI Board of Directors adopted RYLA as an official program of Rotary International.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 35
Our club turns 32 this week! One of my favorite club birthday celebrations was our 25th anniversary, a fancy event held at the Four Seasons Biltmore. This week's pin was designed by Diana Washburn and was given to each member as a memory of the celebration.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
