A successful prospective member mixer was held at the beautiful Santa Barbara Club on October 12! There was lots of mingling with old friends and making new friends . . . and a few past members joined us as well.
A huge thank you to our Membership Chair LuzMaria Ortiz, the Membership Committee, Santa Barbara Club, Scott Burns for the tasty Windrun Wine, and to all the club members who attended and brought guests.
Our efforts do not end here. Please follow up with your guests and invite any additional prospective members to join us at an upcoming meeting, social event, or service project!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE
This year’s District Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Westlake this past weekend. The conference was FUN and INSPIRATIONAL just as District Governor Nick Frankle promised. The theme “If you can dream it, you can do it” was carried out by District Fairy Godmothers Vicki Arndt and Susan Murata.
Featured speakers, Rotary International President’s Representative PDG Eva Vida, Past TRF Trustee Steve Brown, TRF Trustee Bryn Styles, and our own PDG Deepa Willingham, promoted peace, membership, and engaging youth. Conference goers were entertained by a hilarious performance by The Three Waiters, as well as musical and dance performances by our local youth. The highlight of this year’s conference was celebrating 100 years of The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Clubs were honored for their annual giving and the $26.50 TRF challenge, individuals were honored for their Major Giving levels, and PDG Brenda Cressey was recognized as a new Arch Klumpf Society Member.
The conference ended on Sunday on an inspirational note with a big send off to the EPiC Challenge riders raising money for PolioPlus, and stories from Rotary’s youth – RYLA, Youth Exchange, Interact, and Rotaract. What a weekend!
Thank you to the club members who attended, Chris Baxter, Karen Kawaguchi, LuzMaria Ortiz, E. Russell Smith, Colin Stephens, David Velarde and Michelle, and Nancy Woods. And, also for working our vacation raffle table!
E. Russell Smith and Nancy Woods represented our club at the Moorpark Sunrise Rotary Golf Tournament. The tournament was held prior to the District Conference at Moorpark Country Club on October 13.

LUZ MARIA COMPETES IN ROTARY'S EPiC CHALLENGE!
In coordination with Rotary District 5240, the EPiC Challenge hit the streets of Ventura County this Sunday, the final day of the District Conference. Cyclists from District 5240 enjoyed the roads where international cycling elites compete during the Tour of California. Participants rode in 100M, 100K, 50M, and 25M routes. This is the third ride organized by Edwin Velarde, RC Westlake Village, to bring awareness to Rotary's global polio eradication efforts. The first EPiC Challenge took place in 2014 from Paso Robles to Monterey, CA, and in June from Busan to Seoul, Korea. This year's Ventura County ride raised more than $10,000 for Polio Plus.

WORLD POLIO DAY
World Polio Day is on October 24! Join Rotary and its partners for a special live broadcast on our progress to create a polio-free world. Together we can end polio forever. Find out how you can get involved: endpolio.org
World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis. Use of this inactivated poliovirus vaccine and subsequent widespread use of the oral poliovirus, developed by Albert Sabin, led to the establishment of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988. As of 2013, GPEI had reduced polio worldwide by 99%.
DIANA WASHBURN TELLS TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE
Let's have some fun! We’re starting a game called Two Truths and a Lie. For each person, he or she shares the three statements in any order. The goal of the game is to determine which statement is false, and also to get to know one another better. The winner is the person who guesses which one is a lie. If no one guesses correctly, the person reveals which one was the lie.
Diana Washburn has agreed to be the first to provide two truths and a lie about herself. At Wednesday’s club meeting we’ll play the game to see who wins!
Was an avid white water rafter.

DID YOU KNOW?
Honorary is one of the four types of membership a person may have in a Rotary club and is exercised only in exceptional cases to recognize an individual for unusual service and contributions to Rotary and society. An honorary member is elected for one year only, and continuing membership must be renewed annually. Honorary members cannot propose new members to the club, do not hold office, and are exempt from attendance requirements and club dues.
Many distinguished heads of state, explorers, authors, musicians, astronauts and other public personalities have been honorary members of Rotary clubs, including King Gustaf of Sweden, King George VI of England, King Badouin of Belgium, King Hassan III of Morocco, Sir Winston Churchill, humanitarian Albert Schweitzer, Charles Lindbergh, composer Jean Sibelius, explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Thor Heyerdahl, Thomas Edison, WaIt Disney, Bob Hope, Dr. Albert Sabin, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and many of the presidents of the United States. Truly, those selected for honorary membership are those who have done much to further the ideals of Rotary.

ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 16
This is the pin in my collection with the most bling and I wore it at the District Foundation Gala this past Saturday at the District Conference. The formal event honored Rotarians who have made extraordinary contributions to The Rotary Foundation so I thought it was fitting to pull out the glitz! It was an inspirational evening!
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
