When you visit our Rotary International website at www.rotary.org/en you see our simple mission statement “We are neighbors, community leaders, and global citizens uniting for the common good. With you, we can accomplish even more.” The first sentence conveys the essence of what Rotary is and our relationship to it. The second sentence is a call to action to inspire us to be engaged Rotarians. It also calls to non-Rotarians who might be inspired to humanitarian service through Rotary if given the opportunity.
August is Membership Month in Rotary. The life-blood of our club and Rotary International is our members. It’s important our club make an asserted ongoing effort to attract and recruit new quality members to our Rotary family while also focusing on retention, engagement, and education of our current members. As Director of Membership, Luz Maria has done an outstanding job creating and implementing a new Action Plan for this year, attracting additional members to the committee, and managing the team with the goal of accomplishing these four primary goals. That said, I would like to remind you that every member in our club has the important responsibility to identify and recruit new members to our club on an ongoing basis. Although a number of members have resigned from our club in the last few years, I’m very confident our collective focus and asserted effort on new member recruitment will result in increasing our membership numbers to historic levels.

GROUP 8 ROTARY CLUBS DONATE PALLET JACK TO FOODBANK
The eight Rotary Clubs of District 5240 Group 8* collectively funded an electric pallet jack for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.
On Friday, July 29, representatives from each of the eight local Rotary clubs presented a check for $4,500 to reimburse the expenses for the pallet jack at the Foodbank's warehouse in Santa Barbara. This gift was collected in the 2015-16 Rotary year.
Rotary's support to purchase this pallet jack will make loading and unloading food and supplies easier and more efficient. The eight clubs donated a similar piece of equipment in 2013.
David Velarde, 2015-16 Rotary District 5240 Assistant Governor, Group 8, coordinated the details of the contribution.

*At the time of the contributions, Group 8 had only eight clubs. There are now nine clubs.

THANK YOU, JUDITH McCAFFREY
For the past 15-plus years, Judith McCaffrey has been hosting Sunrise Rotarians on her pink blankets at Concerts in the Park. If you've ever been one of the 3,000+ attendees at one of the city's popular summer concerts at Chase Palm Park you know how valuable having a place to sit is! Judith sets out her pink blankies for Rotarians and friends early so she gets a prime spot. Over the years, Sunrisers have enjoyed dozens of wonderful bands, good food, lively conversation, and the fellowship of good friends. Thank you, Judith!

FIESTA FLOAT CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES
The Rotarians of Group 8 lead by Walter Stephens,RC Goleta Noontime, have been hard at work constructing the Rotary entry in the Old Spanish Days Fiesta Parade. This year's Old Spanish Days theme is The Coastal Frontier and our float will be an 1890 replica of Stearns Wharf. There are still lots of opportunities to volunteer to help on the float this week, from painting (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) and applying flowers (Thursday).
GROUP 8 FIESTA FLOAT DECORATING AND PARADE WATCHING
Join your fellow Sunrise Rotarians for two great family-friendly Fiesta activities:
Thursday, August 4, 5-9 pm: Volunteers needed to help flower the float! Lots of fun for friends and family too. Bring garden gloves and pruners. Meet at the Carriage Museum, 129 Castillo Street.
Friday, August 5, 12 noon: View our beautiful float and cheer on DG Nick and all the Group 8 Presidents along the parade route! We will set aside a spot along Cabrillo Blvd. on the beach side near Sambos (hopefully). Bring chairs, sunscreen, and your Fiesta spirit! For those interested, we'll walk to a restaurant for lunch after the parade. Contact Diana Washburn if planning to attend so she can email with the location.

DID YOU KNOW?
Was Paul Harris the first president of a Rotary club? No.
Was Paul Harris the first president of Rotary International? Yes.
There is an easy explanation to this apparent contradiction. Although Paul Harris was the founder and organizer of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905, the man selected to be the first president was one of the other founding members, Silvester Schiele.
By the year 1910, there were 16 Rotary clubs, which linked up as an organization called the National Association of Rotary Clubs. Two years later, the name was changed to the International Association of Rotary Clubs, as Rotary was organized in Winnipeg, Canada, and then in England, Ireland, and Scotland. In 1922, the name was shortened to Rotary International.
When the first organization of Rotary clubs was created in 1910, Paul Harris was selected as the first president. He served in this position for two years, from 1910 until 1912. Thus, the founder of the Rotary idea, who declined to be president of the first club, became the first president of the worldwide organization, Rotary International.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 5
IGNITE was a membership program developed by Rotary Zones 25/26 in 2011. The program's goal was to focus on attracting and engaging members by igniting every Rotarian to participate in a variety of membership activities. Everyone has something to contribute toward the success of their club, therefore, every person has the power to make a difference. Nick Frankle served on the Zone Membership Committee that developed and launched IGNITE. He visited our club and gave this pin to those who would pledge to bring a new member into Rotary. The Zone’s new program is called Priority 1 and the premise is basically the same, attract and engage members. I chose this week’s pin in honor of DG Nick Frankle.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
