DID YOU KNOW?
Harry Ruggles was the fifth man to join Paul Harris in the conversations that led to the formation of the first Rotary club in Chicago in 1905. Harry was a fellow who enjoyed singing, and this was a popular activity at the turn of the century. At an early meeting of the fledgling group, Harry jumped on a chair and urged everyone to join him in a song.
Group singing soon became a traditional part of each Rotary meeting. The custom spread to many of the clubs in the United States and is still a popular fellowship activity in the Rotary meetings of such diverse countries as Australia, Japan, Nigeria, New Zealand and Canada. Some clubs sing a national song as the formal opening of the meeting. Social singing, however, is seldom found in the Rotary clubs in Europe, South America and Asia.
Photo: "Home on the Range" was a favorite song of our late Charter President Brooke Sawyer who encouraged singing at club meetings.
This is one of a series of short articles about Rotary written by Cliff Dochterman, PRIP, and originally published in the Rotary publication, The ABCs of Rotary.
ROTARY PIN CHALLENGE - Week 15
Last week we lost our dear friend and fellow Rotarian, Brooke Sawyer. In the 17 years I knew Brooke I learned there was one thing he loved as much as Rotary, Cal Berkeley. Always wearing his Cal bow tie, Cal lapel pin, or Cal cap, he was a dedicated Berkeley alum. I pulled this Rotary bear pin from my collection in honor of Brooke and his Golden Bears.
I have challenged myself to wear my Rotary pin EVERY day. By doing this I hope to raise awareness of Rotary and Rotary's work. I invite all Sunrise Rotarians to join me in wearing a Rotary pin EVERY day.
