Rotary Global Grant funds a Photocoagulator for Ocular Surgeries in Mexico.

The Photocoagulator for Ocular Surgeries project funds the purchase of a photocoagulator to the Clinic Beatriz Velazco de Aleman (the legal name of the clinic is Celaya Ophthalmologic Clinic) where our club has established a permanent program (32 years) of cataract surgeries. Currently, the Clinic does not have a photocoagulator, so this new equipment will allow the doctors to provide a better professional service to the beneficiaries. The beneficiaries are individuals who suffer from ocular deficiency or blindness caused by cataracts. They do not have access to health services due to a lack of financial resources. The beneficiaries come not only from Celaya but also from nearby communities. Additionally, during the annual campaign, 60 to 100 surgeries are performed, and the clinic continues to offer free surgeries throughout the year. Approximately 500 low-income individuals come to the Clinic requesting medical service, out of the 500, 60% need surgery.

Currently, in Celaya, there is only one photocoagulator in a private clinic, the clinic offers surgeries at a very high cost, a medical service out of reach for low-income individuals.

Based on the last report from the INEGI (National Institute of statistics and geography) in Mexico there are 2.5 million individuals with ocular deficiency or blindness. One of the main causes is Senile Cataract. More than 80% are 50 or older. The new equipment would allow the doctors be more efficient in their patient evaluation, diagnostic and treatment. Currently the clinic does not have a photocoagulator.

Throughout the years we have noticed that surgeries take a long time due to the lack of adequate equipment. Dr. Irusteta, the lead doctor at the clinic, mentioned the photocoagulator would be of great assistance to offer a more professional service with less time. Having the new equipment prevents potential collateral damage to the eyes of the patients. The new equipment would allow the doctors to be more effective and would be more comfortable for the patients.

The Rotary Club of Celaya Nat-Tha-Hi and the Board of Directors of Celaya's Ophthalmologic Clinic annually organize a free eye surgery campaign. This partnership allows to help thousands of individuals to recover their sight. The Board fundraises to get funds to purchase medical materials and equipment. Monitors the well-being of the patients and the functioning of the clinic.

This project is funded by a Rotary Foundation Global Grant, District 4140, District 5240, Rotary Club of Celaya Nat-Tha-Hi and Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise.
