Jacob Angel and Lucas Angel, winners of our club's Four-Way Test Essay Contest.

Congratulations to Jacob Angel and Lucas Angel, winners of our club's Four-Way Test Essay Contest.

Santa Barbara elementary, junior high, and high school students were invited to participate in the annual Rotary District 5240 Four-Way Test Essay Contest. Each Rotary club in the District may submit one essay from each of the school levels. The winning essays of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunriseā€™s contest are Lucas Angel, a 3rd grade student from Peabody Charter School, and Jacob Angel, a 7th grade student at La Colina Junior High. The goal of the writing project is to encourage students to consider how the Four-Way Test can be used for conflict resolution with classmates. This is accomplished by expressing their thoughts in an essay that relates a case or story where they will, or could have, applied these principles in their everyday lives.

The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings:

Of the things we think, say or do
  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The District 5240 review team will conduct its review and announce the winners in each school level by April 15, 2022. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Our club's Four-Way Test Essay Contest was coordinated by Joanne Schoenfeld, Vocational Service Director.
