Luz Maria Ortiz embraces Rotary service worldwide, building friendships and living “service above self” every day.

Luz Maria Ortiz
A Rotarian since 1992, as a charter member of the Rotary Club of Celaya Nat Tha Hi, and now the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise.

Why did you join Rotary?
I experienced Rotary at a very young age; my maternal grandfather was a Rotarian. I witnessed how Rotary was impacting the lives of people in need in my community. When I was invited to charter an all-female Rotary club in Celaya, Mexico, I welcomed the opportunity to join a group of professional women with the same values and enthusiasm for service.

What has been your most meaningful or memorable Rotary experience?
I have had many meaningful experiences in Rotary, from marrying E. Russell Smith to participating in eye surgeries in Celaya, Mexico for 30 years, to distributing wheelchairs and serving as District Governor. However, the most memorable experience is traveling to India twice to take part in National Immunization Days. Giving the polio vaccine to children to protect them from paralysis and death was rewarding and gave me a sense of purpose.

What have you learned or gained through Rotary?
I have learned that working collectively, we have better chances of success. I have made friends in other countries, all of whom share the same vision of making the world a better place.

When you're not Rotary-ing, how do you like to spend your time?
I play tennis every day, learn new languages, and enjoy watching movies, traveling, and working in our insurance business.

What does "service above self" mean to you?
Prioritize the needs of others. I have a privileged life; I feel a sense of responsibility to give back.

Each month’s Member Spotlight features a Rotarian sharing their story, experiences, and what Rotary means to them. These spotlights celebrate the diverse paths that bring us together in service and fellowship—and show how Rotary makes a difference both locally and globally. We hope you’ll enjoy getting to know our members in a new way and perhaps be inspired to imagine your own Rotary journey.
