District Grant supports new equipment for kitchen at Los Volcanes Community Center in Mexico.
The Los Volcanes Kitchen Project provides funds for the purchase of a refrigerator and mixer for the kitchen at Los Volcanes Community Center, which serves over 500 children in an impoverished area on the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The children’s mothers volunteer to cook meals, teach cooking skills, and sell meals to the community. Proceeds help fund the cooking classes and feed the children.
The new refrigerator will allow for better food storage, reducing waste. In Puerto Vallarta’s hot and humid climate, food spoils quickly without proper refrigeration—donations can go bad in just one or two days. This refrigerator will help preserve food longer, reducing the need for frequent store trips and allowing them to accept more donations.
The mixer will greatly enhance the cooking class, enabling mothers and daughters to prepare larger quantities of cookies for sale more efficiently.
The cooking program was created by Art Fumerton, an American with a passion for education. We have supported his educational program for more than 8 years.
This project is funded by the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation and a grant from the Rotary District 5240 Charitable Foundation.
