600 local third grade students receive dictionaries.
The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise began distributing 600 dictionaries to local third grade students in the Santa Barbara and Hope School Districts. Participating schools include: Adams, Vieja Valley, Harding, Monroe, Franklin, Hope, Washington, Roosevelt, and Peabody Schools.
This program began in 2008 with then Rotary President Dennis Johns. The club board decided in lieu of giving gifts to the weekly speakers to use those funds to help purchase dictionaries. Each speaker who visits Rotary receives a card stating that 15 dictionaries will be provided to local third graders with their name in it. To date, RCSBS has distributed more than 10,000 dictionaries to the local schools. This project has been well received by the students and teachers.
Funding for the dictionary project is provided by the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise Charitable Foundation and a grant from Rotary District 5240 Charitable Foundation.
