Protecting the Health of Low-Income Essential Workers: Latinx, Indigenous Migrants, andCOVID-19
Oct 14, 2020
Melissa Smith, MD, is the Director of Health Equity Initiatives at UC Santa Barbara, and Interim Coordinator of the Latinx & Indigenous Migrant Covid-19 Response Task Force (LIMCRTF) in Santa Barbara County. Dr. Smith will provide an update on this county-wide collaboration between the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and 93 cross-sectoral partners, including community-based organizations, health service providers, elected officials, academic colleagues, funders, and community members. The Task Force's purpose is to strengthen the collaboration among partners who work with Latinx and Indigenous migrant communities, in particular supporting people who provide essential, but low-wage services, such as farmworkers, and other service industries. Our other speker, Dr. Dan Fishbein has graciously ceded his presentation time to his colleague. Dr. Fishbein is a UCAB graduate and attended medical school at Wisconsin. He received training in infectious disease at the University of New Mexico. In 1983, he joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where he received additional training in epidemiology and public health and conducted research on various infectious and non-infectious health conditions. After he retired from CDC in 2010, he returned to Santa Barbara, where he has worked on preventing cervical cancer in Southeast Asia, promoting active transportation on the Central Coast, writing about the health benefits of yoga for physicians, and the public health aspects of coronavirus. He has recently begun assisting the LIMCRTF. |
