Curtis Reinhardt introduced Ben Greenaway, formerNews Director at KVEC radio. Ben was selected for a total immersion Rotary exchange program to Northern India. An Ojai Rotarian led the group including a radio executive, a human resources executive, and an artist. As Ben left the plane he immediately noticed that he "wasn't in Kansas anymore". The streets were crowded with people, cows, camels, and an occasional monkey.

During his trip from the airport to the hotel the roads were shared by bicycles piled high with goods, walkers carrying loads, motorcycles, and other cars. The pollution and trash on the streets are a major issue for the local government. Lately, concerted efforts have been made to clean up the natural resources of the area. A water treatment facility was added to treat the raw sewage that was flowing into a local lake. The lake is now clear enough for the fish to return and for recreational boating and fishing. Ben noted that the people of Northern India are not very different from us in their wants, needs, and community mindedness.
