Sandy Nichols introduced Jennifer Rhymes: 29 years with the YMCA. CEO for the Orange YMCA for 12 years. MS in Human Services administration and a BS from Cal Poly in recreation Administration. Started with the SLO County YMCA in 2001.

The YMCA is a county wide effort. One of their successful programs is the Youth in Government. The kids role play and emulate government from local to national situations. The program creates better voters, more likely to hold some type of public office and transforms a better understanding, respect and knowledge of how our country's government works.

Steve Curry was involved in the Indian Guides program when he was young. Steve said his father was Big Running Water and his moniker was Little Running Water. This program provides for a mentor and an adult role model. The Y's after school programs are partnered with other community organizations and are designed to close the achievement gap by providing special help to the kids. It is an after school enrichment program that uses innovative ways to stimulate the teaching and the learning.

Families are not turned away because of lack of money. The Y will find a way to enroll the kids in need. One recent effort is to enhance physical fitness by the use of jump rope training and competitions. The trainers are also involved and it is good for everyone. There are six levels of competition and they have jump rope exhibitions to allow the kids to show off their skills.

They have over 1000 kids participate in their basketball programs which they do in concert with other community organizations. The accept applications for volunteers that will be fully vetted and trained. They are funded by grants and donations. To learn more or to donate: 543-8235, www.sloymca.org .
