Introduced by Sandy Nichols: Inger has lived in the area since 1985. She is the chair of the Arroyo Grande Relay For Life event in the Five Cities area.      In 1985, in Seattle, a colorectal surgeon, decided to run for 24 hours to bring attention to the issues of cancer. Sponsors supported this run with funds and it has evolved into what is now known as the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, a worldwide event that raises money to do work to prevent cancer, save lives, diminish suffering from cancer; all through research, education, advocacy and service. Relay For Life is a community gathering where teams of people will camp out at St. Patrick's Church/School and team members will take turns walking/running around a track for 24 hours. Because cancer never sleeps, each team will have a representative on the track at all times during the 24 hours. It is an overnight event filled with camaraderie, fun, lunch, dinner, midnight pizza party and ceremony for those who have survived and those who have lost their life to cancer. It is an event to turn sadness into a source of energy!

Survivors are honored by taking the first lap around the track; care givers will take the second lap. The relay brings people from all walks of life together with the common goal of eliminating cancer. Teams come from businesses, clubs, families, friends, hospitals, churches, schools, etc. Inger said her mother and mother-in-law are cancer survivors and she doesn't want her daughter to have cancer. She said she appreciated the efforts of Terry Merlo and the Rotary Club of GB forming a team headed by Sandy and Scott Nicolls. The event is scheduled for August 2-3, 10 am at St. Patrick's School. Donations made out to the American Cancer Society may be given to Scott or Sandy to help make their team effort successful.
