Dr. Ahmad Amir, Ophthalmologist
Lisa Evans
introduced Dr. Amir as an Ophthalmologist, Pacific Eye Surgeons, received his degree from George Washington School of Medicine, has a specialty in cataract surgery and is the past president of the SLO Medical Association.
Dr. Amir discussed the most common eye problems and complaints:
Dry Eyes
: manifested from age, in the winter/summer from air conditioners, allergies; Systane Free is a medicine that mimics tears and used as a treatment, one drop 2-4 times per day. Flax seed oil in tablets seems to work well. Punctal plug will keep tears around longer. There are also prescription drugs that will help.
Blepharitis:
itching around eye lids. From plugged oil glands. Common condition and treated by massaging with a warm cloth. A gel is also available to treat this condition.
Stye:
a lump on the eyelid from a plugged oil gland and also treated with a warm cloth.
Allergies
: may lead to conjunctivitis. Patients may have rough skin around eye lid.
Hemorrhage
: a red spot shows up in the eye. It is common but not dangerous. It may be caused by a regular course of aspirin or by high blood pressure. May want to consult with your doctor if taking blood thinners and this problem is encountered.
Foreign Body Sensation:
common in contact lens wearers. Corneal ulcer may occur from continuous use of and unclean contact lens. Herpes will cause this sensation and is treated with viral eye drops. Shingles may occur around eyes/nose and is very painful. Metal in the eye is common around metal workers. Upon removal rust around the foreign body must also be removed. Sometimes a misdirected eye lash will cause a similar sensation.
Floaters and Flashes:
may occur when vitreous jelly in the eye turns to liquid. It's a normal occurrence but may lead to retina detachment. See your eye doctor if you have flashes. Flashed may be a precursor to migraine headaches.
Dr. Amir
answered questions about eye surgery such as Lasik surgery. This surgery reduces the need for glasses and is much safer now than when earlier used. Has a 95% success rate. Pacific Eye Surgeons are the only local center with the most modern Lasik surgery equipment.
