Speaker Guidelines for the Rotary Club of China Lake
Thank you for your interest in giving a presentation to the Rotary Club of China Lake. We look forward to learning from your expertise and experience.
- The club meets at noon at Victoria's at the Heritage located at 1050 North Norma Street, Ridgecrest, CA.
- The club will host you for lunch. You're invited to join us for lunch at no cost to you. Please let us know if there will be others attending with you and we will provide lunch for them as Well.
About Rotary
Rotary first began in Chicago in 1905. A young lawyer named Paul Harris with three close business acquaintances saw a need to do something good for Chicago. In fact their first service project was the first restroom in the downtown area for public use. After a short beginning, they decided to rotate their meetings at each other's business, hence Rotary began.
Rotary International, the world's first service organization, is made up of over 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Its members form a global network of business and professional leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve their communities and the world. Strong fellowship among Rotarians and meaningful community and international service projects characterized Rotary worldwide.
About Our Club
The Rotary Club of China Lake was founded on June 27, 1951 and is one of the oldest organizations in the Indian Wells Valley. Our members originally came from the major employer in town-NOTS but as the community has changed and grown..so has the Rotary Club of China Lake. Our club participates in both local and international service projects.
The list of all of the activities of the club would take pages and pages. So, here are just a few:
- Clothing and supplies to children in Bosnia
- Polio Eradication
- Sponsorship of 2 Interact Clubs
- Annual fundraising effort to support academic scholarship program
- Hosts of the Annual Verizon Community Dinner
- Habitat for Humanity projects
- Building wheelchair ramps
- Sponsorship of the annual Respect for Law Dinner & the Blue Jacket of the Year Awards
- Sponsor an annual 4 Way Test Essay Contest in our local schools
- Sponsors of the annual Leadership & Ethics Seminar for local high school students
- Sponsor of 2 local high school students in the Rotary Youth Leadership Award program
Your Presentation
To help you prepare your presentation, here are a few guidelines/tips:
- There are typically 35-50 members, visiting Rotarians and guests in attendance.
- You will have 15-25 minutes for your presentation, including any time for Q&A. Please let us know how long your presentation is before the meeting.
- A brief biography will help our Program Chair give an accurate introduction.
- The meeting ends promptly at 1:00pm.
- We have access to audio visual equipment but have to coordinate it before the meeting. Let us know if you need any equipment for your presentation.
- Your presentation needs to be vocationally educational and must avoid overt sales, personal political or personal religious messages except as they relate to the company, project or institution you are representing.
- We want to learn about you and/or your topic but please do not make a "sales pitch" or directly solicit the club members for purchases or donations.
- All requests for donations or purchasing services must go through our committee and board approval process.
- Handouts for club members are welcome, so bring a few extra.
- You will be invited to stay after the meeting to chat with members.
