Rotary Works to Eradicate Polio Around the WorldRotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort. Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. Click on the link below for more information about how Rotarians are involved in Polio Eradication. |

Support to SLO4homeOur Rotary Club is very happy to be supporting SLO4Home, a new nonprofit on the Central Coast that is raising money to help those who fled Afghanistan last year start new lives in SLO County. Cathy and Steve Francis are standing inside a storage unit that will supply all the needs of a family's new apartment when they re-locate to this area soon. While the nonprofit is focused on bringing Afghan families to SLO right now, it's not limiting itself to any one group. their mission statement is broad enough that SLO4Home could address other groups of refugees in the future. SLO4Home's various committees will offer refugees assistance with finding a job, transportation, housing, governmental coordination, culture and hospitality, and more. Help to the Hungry in Morro BaySteve and Cathy Francis spend their Sunday mornings making sandwiches for distribution in Morro Bay to anyone who needs a little assistance at this time. The meat is provided by The San Luis Obispo Food Bank, and Cathy and Steve as well as Linda Fidell provide the other ingredients. The dinners are open to all and there is a loosely knit group (mostly comprised of people from Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary) that has been providing these dinners for years. The sandwiches are a fairly recent addition, the thought being that now people will have something to eat on Tuesday, as well as Monday. Thank you, Cathy and Steve, for doing good in our local community! ![]() |

Top Reasons to Join a Rotary clubWe all know that Rotary’s motto is ‘Service Above Self’. If you have an inkling to help others, Rotary is a great place to do it. However, Rotary is SO MUCH MORE than that. WIIFM? What is in it for you?.... VALUE! Rotary offers lots of amazing opportunities to meet influential business leaders in your community and professionally network with them. Rotary club members represent a cross-section of the community’s owners, executives, managers, political leaders, and professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy. Expand your international awareness, make quality like-minded new friends that are also movers and shakers in the community in so many fields such as health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment, mentor young people, be totally entertained all of the time learning from powerful subject matter experts, join in on a myriad of very fun social activities, and be accountable and held true to high ethical standards in your profession and in your daily life. Rotarians abide by The Four-Way Test: Of the things we think, say or do: 1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? Looking for new friends? Rotary is the place to find them. Looking to help out in your community? Rotary is the place to do it. The value of Rotary is immeasurable for others whose lives you will touch and for yourself as well! ![]() |

Rotary Protects the Environment It is wonderful to see that Rotary has established the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG). Karen Hand, the Communications Director of ESRAG states it perfectly:“Any project in any area of focus will benefit from having environmental sustainability as one of its watchwords. It’s a lot harder to supply clean water to people if your watershed is compromised— if your river is full of industrial, human, and animal waste. Basic education and literacy is a challenge when kids are sick because the school well is contaminated. Health is affected when insects carrying diseases expand their geographic range due to changing climate patterns. Water wars and climate refugees will make achieving peace and conflict resolution more complicated. Economic development is slowed when there’s not adequate energy. Rotary would do a huge service to the world if it moved every water project from a diesel pump to wind or solar. That’s a project that’s scalable.” “Climate change could destroy the livelihoods of millions of people and create much greater migratory pressures than we see today,” says Francesco Menonna, Rotary scholar. Locally, in San Luis Obispo County, many of our Rotary Clubs have already adopted various projects to help our environment: The Rotary Passport Club of the Central Coast is focusing on the Monarch butterfly’s habitat preservation and creation as well as various beach and creek clean up parties; Rotarians built the community garden at Meadow Park as a joint project with the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo Daybreak, and Rotaract SLO; and The Grover Beach Rotary Club set up recycling stations at local events, etc. Want to read more about how Rotarians across the world are already fighting climate change right now? Local Rotarians Plant Milkweed to help Monarch Butterflies ThriveLocal members of the Rotary Passport Club of the Central Coast have picked up over 100 young milkweed plants to re-plant in their gardens. Monarch butterflies rely on their host plant, milkweed, for the most critical parts of their life cycle. Milkweed is the only plant on which the monarch will lay its eggs. The milkweed contains toxins that are critical for the life of the monarch. When the eggs hatch, the larvae (caterpillars) feed on the leaves until they form chrysalises. The caterpillars store the milkweed toxins away in a special organ that they carry through every phase of their lives to protect themselves from predators. The monarch butterfly population has experienced a drastic reduction in numbers in recent years. Western monarch populations have declined over 99% since 1980 and reached their lowest point in 2018, according to the Xerces Society. The loss of milkweed in the spring and summer breeding areas is one of the driving factors behind the plummeting numbers of overwintering monarchs in California and Mexico. Agriculture, habitat clearing, rural land development, and the increased use of pesticides and GMO crops have wiped out native milkweed across the nation. Milkweed shortages result in the inability to hatch future generations, driving population decline. Butterflies are pollinators, important to us all, and they are the proverbial “canary in a coalmine”. They warn us of negative living conditions. The most impactful way to help boost monarch populations is to conserve and restore habitat. Planting milkweed in your garden is the single most important thing you can do at home to improve the monarch’s chances. ![]() ![]() |

To access these and many other remarkable courses, go to https://learn.rotary.org/pages/36/course-catalogs and log in. New Free Food Pantries Set Up To HelpSeveral local Rotary Clubs have come together in a new way to help the hungry in our community. Free Food Pantry Boxes have been set up throughout San Luis Obispo County and are stocked with cereal, peanut butter, soup, snacks, etc. They are a great resource for families that don’t have enough to eat. In the 5 Cities area, one pantry box is located on the 900 block of Newport Ave, in Grover Beach. "You don’t have to do much to make a big difference in someone’s life" says Laura Ochoa of the Rotary Passport Club of the Central Coast. "There’s a tremendous need for this." Members Natasha, Beau, and Aliyah Mercurio helped fellow Rotarian George Shearer build pantry boxes in his wood workshop. PathPoint also sponsors one of Rotary's pantry boxes. More boxes are being planned and all Rotarians will be thrilled to see empty boxes that need restocking! Though small in size, it is a simple solution to take a bite out of an ongoing struggle in this community. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Rotary Passport Club of the Central Coast- A Different Kind of Rotary Membership![]() Rotary is a service club. Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else and the self-fulfillment that comes in the process. It is definitely very richly rewarding. The term “passport” refers to the ability for our members to move freely from club to club, attending the meetings (virtual too) and participating in the activities of other clubs. Any Rotarian can attend another club when traveling, but our passport club encourages our members to do so regularly which brings fresh ideas back to our club. Unlike traditional Rotary Clubs, the benefits of the Rotary Passport Club of the Central Coast include… • Meeting less frequently and without required weekly lunches. If you have a busy schedule, you will have more choices for fitting Rotary into your life. • Focusing meetings on service or social activities. • Appealing to people who wouldn’t join a more traditional club. We also help keep people in Rotary who might otherwise leave. • Affordable dues. We can help retain members where expense is a drawback to joining or continuing Rotary. • Measuring club health by participation rather than attendance. • “Meetings” which are quarterly, can be social gatherings, service activities, virtual meetings, or fundraisers. • More Connections — Our members quickly build relationships across the district and beyond. • Strong Service Projects — Connecting with members of other clubs presents opportunities for our club and other clubs to partner together on service projects to create greater impact both locally and globally. Rotary is an organization of leaders and successful people. Serving in a Rotary position is like a college education. Hone Leadership Skills: - Learn how to motivate, influence and lead leaders. Develop Citizenship in your Community: Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen. We would LOVE for you to join us. Please email Laura Ochoa for more info. lw3251@yahoo.com

Passport Helps Rotary de Tolosa's Child SpreeThis morning over 100 children that were identified by their teachers and principals as needing cloths had their needs met. Three Passport Rotarians joined over 100 other Rotarians and family members at Kohls Department store for a 6am shopping spree and full breakfast at Embassy Suites Hotel with parents. Passport Rotarians donated funds to cloth 7 of the children. Thank you Rotary de Tolosa for this favorite annual community project. My kindergartener at first told me she did not like to run. Imagine that. We traded her black strapped poorly fitting dress shoes for sparkling pink high top sneakers. She was last seen running all around the Embassy Suites Hotel. Today.... About Rotary Passport![]() PASSPORT Clubs are a new type of Rotary Club encouraged and established by Rotary International. For decades Rotary has maintained membership at 1.2 million members. Passport Clubs provide a unique 21st Century option for Rotary Membership. The research on retention from RI found members often left due to a “T”. Our target members are former Rotarians that may have left for one of the “T’s” = Time, Treasure and/or Tradition. Also, we will seek out new Rotarians who love the concept of Rotary Service but have a challenge with use of time, treasure or club traditions. As stated in our bylaws, we will not solicit current Rotary members. If a Rotarian is interested, we ask they contact their club to discuss their reasons for a potential change. Rotary Passport Members are full-fledged Rotarians but with different obligations. Our footprint is all of Rotary District 5240 Region 4 (SLO County and North SB County/Santa Maria area). The Passport Club is a service based club that will serve its many communities and other Rotary Clubs by donating time and supporting Club Fundraisers. In short, Passport Clubs offer more volunteer opportunities and fewer meetings. There are Four General Membership Meetings per year. We have a regularly scheduled monthly board meetings followed by a social. All members are welcome at both meetings. Additional Rotary volunteer opportunities will occur throughout the month. The Passport Club will post service projects from Rotary Clubs within our footprint along with projects from other non-profits. The club’s goal is to select one project a month as a club wide project and encourage full club participation. Additional volunteer opportunities will be announced so our members can participate individually, as a group or as a company or business. Members have an annual 60-hour commitment which in addition to service projects can include participation and/or support of non-profit fundraisers, non-profit board involvement and more. Rotary Passport Club of the Central Coast It is all about giving back. Jim Eaton-805-550-8970 Gil Igleheart 805-995-1015 rpccc5240.org
