Good News & Announcements:

Once again Jeff Green is making history, this time in Nevada, where he and his wife Lisa nudged Nevada citizenship past the 3 million mark.

Win Eaton kicked over-60-butt in the Bakersfield Marathon placing second in that division. Interesting side note, his random bib number was 717, coinciding with our cool Bako717 sweatshirt.

Another Rotary stud and understudy of coach Jim Damien, Jeff Gutierrez, finished his first triathlon and won a righteous Participation Medal.

Jay Rosenlieb's son recently received his master's degree in Philosophy from ASU. He is now working on a second master's degree in architecture.

Getting Down to Business was iced this week, instead, we were treated to a Family Feud type of game called "Big Jim's Holiday Game Show". Competitors Andy Barkate and Jordan Kaufman had to name Christmas related words in the shortest amount of time possible. Since Andy went second, and he couldn't repeat Jordan's answers, the odds were stacked against him. But in true Millennial fashion, there were no losers. Each won a $40 gift card.

Holiday Schedule

We have a meeting next week on the 12th, but the following week on Thursday, December 19, we are dark, instead, join us for Christmas Lights at CALM that evening starting at 5:30pm.

Program:

Dave Whelden introduced today's speaker and new Rotarian member, Kevin Pope. Kevin is the local Captain of the Bakersfield branch of the Salvation Army. It's no wonder he joined our Rotary, our bell ringing day is their biggest fundraiser, last year netting more than $8,000!

Most people know about the Salvation Army thrift store. Who hasn't donated some items, right? And probably most people are aware of their adult rehabilitation programs. But Kevin shared a much broader mission scope.

Social Services
Christmas food and toys: 489 households served. 1,348 individuals served, 2,556 toys distributed to 852 boys and girls.
Kevin's wife and daughter spend about a couple of weeks of hand choosing toys for each individual child's wish list.

Thanksgiving food: 255 households served

Food Pantry:
They also have a well-stocked food pantry.
  • Eligible every 30 days
  • Member of CAPK food bank
  • Balanced food boxes

Older Adult Services
Care home visitation
Church services
Live music
Senior meals program
Bingo

Youth Services
Low-cost Summer residential camps
Troop programs
Summer day camps

Other areas of service are:
• Disaster Services
• Emergency Assistance
• Family Counseling Services

They also possess a cool command truck for when they are on location at disaster sites. A mobile canteen (army speak for a food truck) can feed up to 700 people a day.

Visitors & Guests:

Shawn Kennemer gust of Jay Rosenlieb
Honorary Downtown Rotarian Rick Kreiser

Jorge Barrientos took his song duties seriously and chose a song in remembrance of Pearl Harbor. We would have sung along, but the lyrics were on another slide and Joe Gregory couldn't get them up fast enough. This was the politically correct version of the song, not the one that shows up in most Google searches... thankfully.
"Big Jim's Holiday Game Show". Competitors Andy Barkate and Jordan Kaufman await the results.
"I don't have time for the paparazzi!" mumbled Ben Taft, here, busy trying to get bell ringers to sign up.
Why doesn't this guy just take the plunge and join OUR Rotary club?
This year, a couple of the bell ringing teams will have a credit card reader that, when you slide it in and out, automatically dings you for $10. After the 4th successive demonstration using Jim Damian's card, his expression changed to one of concern.
Dave Whelden and Kevin Pope- that's his big smile.
