Now that things are starting to reopen and we are meeting in person, we thought we'd show what we've been doing during the past year.

We did continue meeting online via Zoom, and if we never have to do that again it'll be too soon. Meanwhile, we had some successful fundraisers and adjusted our community service to meet the needs of those affected by the pandemic. And we had a blast doing it!

This was a big week for Arroyo Grande Rotary! Although we have had to postpone any major events, we were able to recognize some very special people during our end of year transition.
The Arroyo Grande Rotary Club presented a check to the Music in Education program which benefits youth in our community.  The $750 donation was funded by proceeds from the Holiday Sing Along.  Pictured are President Shannon Dempsey, Past President Mary Sansone and Holiday Sing Along talent directors Tricia and Raymond/
The Arroyo Grande Rotary club delivered numerous bags of non-perishable goods and a check for $1,024 to the Oceano Resource Center.  The donations will ensure Thanksgiving meals for 20-30 local families in need and were provided by all members of the Arroyo Grande Rotary Club.  Pictured is Arroyo Grande Past President David Tennant and representatives from the Oceano Resource Center.
Peggy Hoobery was recognized by President Dempsey as our September Rotarian of the Month at today's meeting.  Peggy recently concluded her chairmanship of our annual charity raffle and it was her guidance and drive that made it a success.  Proceeds from the raffle significantly fund the Arroyo Grande Rotary club's scholarships and other educational programs throughout the year.  Congratulations on the well deserved recognition and thanks for all you do Peggy!
Carol Taylor was recognized as the Arroyo Grande Rotarian of the Month for August.  Carol has been instrumental in leading the Arroyo Grande Rotary backpack drive for The Boys and Girls Club of South San Luis Obispo County for many years.  She has coordinated volunteers, purchased supplies and ensured everything runs smoothly for the many children The Boys and Girls Club helps prepare for the new school year.  Carol, we truly appreciate all that you do and your recognition is well deserved, congratulations!
WE HAVE A WINNER - Congratulations to Gary Barnhart who is our 2019 winner of a brand new 2019 Ford Escape!  Of course the real winners are all of the local charities and student scholarships the Arroyo Grande Rotary Club supports year round.  A special thanks to our corporate sponsors (The Foodbank of San Luis Obispo County, AMP Surf, Restorative Partners, The Boys & Girls Club of South San Luis Obispo County, Burdine Printing and Dimes Media) and all the hard working Rotarians and volunteers who spread the word and sold tickets in support of this important community fundraiser!
Members of the Arroyo Grande Rotary club had a private tour of the Pismo Beach water treatment facility and learned about Central Coast Blue a South County initiative of the cities of Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach and the Oceano services district to reclaim and recycle water through purification and injection into the ground water supply.  The program in it's early stages is producing potable water and members were challenged to a taste test between tap water and recycled water....the results were unanimous, recycled water tasted better!
Arroyo Grande Rotarians serving the community - Homeless Lucheons a program chaired by AG Rotarian Rick Beels.  Once a month the Arroyo Grande Rotary Club provides lunch at the People's Kitchen in Grover Beach for the homeless and those in need.  Our July volunteer team (pictured) of Shannon Dempsey, Kristy Huerth and Eric Fahnoe is ready to start service!
The Arroyo Grande Rotary celebrated 2018-2019 President Mike Morrison's term thanking him for his leadership and demoted him to Immediate Past President with a seemingly never ending telling of bad jokes!  Incoming 2019-2020 President Shannon Dempsey introduced her new board at the end of the evening (pictured).  A fun time was had by all and the accomplishments of another year were shared with family and friends in attendance.

The Arroyo Grande Rotary Club has awarded local restaurant Old Juan’s Cantina their “Make a Difference Award” for their ongoing contribution to the club’s Homeless Luncheon Program.

According to the message on the award, brother-and-sister owners Eva and Adam Verdin have provided full meals to the homeless in South County numerous times, asking nothing in return. Rotary Club member Rick Beels explains that the club “wanted to show them that we appreciate their generosity, and surprise them with this award. They exemplify the Rotary motto, ‘Service Above Self.’ ”

The AG Rotary became involved with South County People’s Kitchen two years ago. The club provides volunteers and serves approximately 70 meals once a month at the Living Waters Community Church in Grover Beach.

For more information on the Arroyo Grande Rotary Club, visit www.agrotary.org . For information on how to support the Homeless Luncheon Program, email Rick Beels at islrick@sbcglobal.net.
