Thursday, June 30th, three dedicated Creekside Rotarians, Sharon Johnson, Ginger and Terry Page became Paul Harris Fellows. To recognize a person as a Paul Harris Fellow is always an honor not only for the individual, but just as well for the club and the District. It is the recognition for exceptional service to the club, District and community, both locally and internationally, as well as a demonstration of significant support for the wonderful work of the Rotary Foundation. Sharon, Ginger and Terry have dedicated their lives to service and we are so very proud to call them Creekside Rotarians.
Cliffor L. Dochterman stated "To describe a PHF only in terms of "Exceptional service" is far too limiting for the entire Rotary world, and totally disregards the historical background of the expression of appreciation for a very generous contribution to The Rotary Foundation. If we did not think much broader in describing a Paul Harris Fellow, and realize it is primarily a magnificent way to raise money for The Foundation, I assure you that The Rotary Foundation would not be one of the great humanitarian and educational foundations of the world." In 1956 the total contribution to The Foundation was $493,722. That year the Trustees came up with the idea of trying to get Rotarians to give $1000 in one major gift and giving them a special "Paul Harris Fellows" recognition if you met the three conditions: contribution must be at least $1,000 in one major gift, from one individual and in one given year. Very few gifts were collected until The Foundation decided that the gift could be collected over several years. Later The Trustees allowed several members to contribute together to make the $1,000 gift. Times have changed and most would agree for the better. By 1993 over $70,000,000 is raised annually, about 80% of those funds come from individuals being named Paull Harris Fellows. They are the backbone of the annual support to The Rotary Foundation and those donations are the only reason that enables Rotarians to carry on a world-wide program of education and humanitarian programs.
