Dan'l Adams, the District Executive of the Klahaya District of the Boy Scouts of America presented our Club the 2018 Charter to run our Scouting program at last week's meeting. The unique arrangement the BSA has with community organizations throughout the nation empowers those organizations with local control on how the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Venturing Scout and Explorer Scout programs are run for the benefit of the youth in their communities.
The types of organizations include faith-based houses of worship, civic clubs, veterans groups, fraternal clubs, parent-led groups, fire and police departments. Lake Stevens has 14 Scout groups. Our Club has sponsored Cub Scout Pack 88 since 1994.
James Monroe is our Chartered Organization Representative to the Pack and the local Scouting District and Council. He explained how the sponsoring process works and announced exciting news for the Club. In the fall of 2017 the National BSA Board approved the inclusion of having girls in the various Boy Scout programs beginning with the Cub Scouts in 2018. He went to the Club Board in December to seek approval of us allowing girls in our Scouting program. The Board unanimously approved and the Pack Leadership began recruiting last month. In fact we are the only Cub Scout program in the Mount Baker Council (which serves Snohomish, Skagit, Whatcom, Island and San Juan Counties) that has allowed girls in Cub Scouts--so far.
We had Cub Scouts and Leaders present at the meeting including a brand new Kindergartner girl who has joined the Pack. Mr. Adams gave charge separately to the Pack adults who represented the Pack Committee and Leaders who work directly with the Scouts. He also gave charge to Mr Monroe as the liaison and the Rotarians as part of the ceremony. He then presented the Charter to President Randy.

The charge to each group of the Pack and Rotarians was to ensure that each Scout and adult would support the program.
Stephen Glassburn, Pack Committee Chair, then gave an update about the Pack. They primarily serve Glenwood Elementary School. With some recent changes in available Cub Scout programs in Lake Stevens the Pack also serves Skyline Elementary. There are over 50 youth members. The 5th grade Cub Scouts will be earning the highest award in Cub Scouting--the Arrow of Light Award and most of them will be joining local Boy Scout Troops. The Cubs are also working hard on their Pinewood Derby cars for the race that's coming up next month. If any Rotarian would like to be a Judge for the Derby let James know. In addition to the Pack helping with the Rotary Club's Community Supper, the Pack signs up for a couple of nights a year as well. After his comments, James Monroe presented Stephen with a Certificate of Appreciation for his service as Pack Committee Chair.
James wrapped up by thanking the Club for their support of our Scouting program. The Mount Baker Council is hosting a fundraising Good Scout Breakfast in late March. Dan'l Adams asked if we would sponsor a table at that breakfast. If you are interested in joining our table contact James.
