The program this week is a presentation by Michael Bowers, the new General Manager of the Lake Stevens Sewer District. George Wood, District Commission President visited with us in February 2012 to update us on the new treatment plant. Now that the plant has been in operation for a couple of years, Michael will tell us how it's running as well as other news about our Sewer District.

It is with sadness that we share the news of the passing of Gordon Bjorg, Sr., owner of Roy Robinson Chevrolet, Subaru and RV's of Marysville, WA. Gordy was a resident of Lake Stevens and enthusiastically supported our Duck Dash program for years. We appreciate the support he and his company have shown the Lake Stevens Community. He will be missed. Rest In Peace.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 16th at Bethany Christian Assembly in Everett at 3:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Gordy's life at the Xfinity Event Center, 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Click here to read more about Gordy.
The Nick of Time Foundation Healthy Heart Screening is coming to Lake Stevens! Wednesday, August 26th at Cavelero Mid High School. Young people are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. When a young person goes in to see their medical profession for a "traditional" physical the provider usually listens to the heart through a stethoscope. However, they don't take a "picture" of the heart. The "picture" can tell the professional if there is a possible anomaly that might lead to dire consequences.
One high school aged athlete suffers a Sudden Cardiac Arrest every three days in the U.S! The leading cause of death in young athletes on the playing field is an undetected heart condition. The best way to detect these heart conditions is through a heart screening using a ECG (Electrocardiogram), and in some cases an Echocardiogram (ultrasound) of the heart.
Nick of Time Foundation in partnership with the University of Washington Medical Center conduct ON-SITE heart screenings for adolescents and young adults ages 14-24. Screenings consists of a Heart Health Survey asking about possible signs & symptoms or family history of a heart condition. An ECG is performed that analyzes the electrical signals of the heart. In some cases a limited physical exam or Echocardiogram of the heart is conducted. The results are reviewed on site by cardiologists and sports physicians experienced in heart screens.
Students at Cavelero and Lake Stevens High Schools have been sent information about the Screening. However, all young people in Lake Stevens ae encourage to participate. If you know of a 14 to 24 year old in our area who may not be a Lake student please encourage them to have this non-invasive screening done. They will need to contact the Foundation to get more information.

Representative Mark Harmsworth visited our Club this past week talking about a "Freshman's" view of the never ending 177 day 2015 Washington State Legislative Session. Freshman legislators rarely get much attention from the leadership or fellow members until relationships are earned and established. Harmsworth commented that sponsoring a bill requires building relationships.
However, Rep. Harmsworth was a strong proponent and sponsor of the House bill funding our Skateboard Park in Lake Stevens along with a provision funding school barricade locks for our Lake Stevens School District. Due to House and Senate conflict over funding transportation and schools, the 177 day session was the longest single legislative session in Washington history.
During his presentation, Harmsworth acknowledged that Senator Steve Hobbs, a member of our club was key to achieving transportation funding for Lake Stevens, the Skateboard Park, and many projects important to our community. The final version of the transportation bill for construction and bonding was $16.1 billion including a 11.9 cent gasoline tax increase and a provision that will allow Sound Transit to ask voters in Pierce, King and Snohomish counties to approve up to $15 billion in taxes to build a new system-extending projects potentially including light rail service to Tacoma
Harmsworth was critical of WSDOT's proposal to raise the number of riders in the I-405 corridor between Bellevue and Lynnwood to three passengers along with a permit. WSDOT relies on the honor system in using the HOV lanes according to Harmsworth. Besides serving on the House Transportation Committee, he is a member of the House Rules Committee and the House Technology and Economic Development Committee.
Harmsworth is married with three children. A former Microsoft executive, he served two terms as councilman on the Mill Creek City Council and served as Mayor Pro-Tem. Thank you Representative Harmsworth for visiting with us!
How do you compress almost 90 years into a 30 minute classification talk? Well, if you are Loren Hole, you don't. At our meeting at the end of July, Loren shared a little bit about himself. Loren has enjoyed 48 years in Rotary and 48 years of perfect attendance. That alone, would take a life time to explain. Secret to a long life: A good and loving wife; stay physically active and stay mentally active. Being a part of this Rotary Club is central to his days. Joined Everett Rotary Club in March 1967. Moved to Lake Stevens in 1989. Transferred to the Lake Stevens Rotary Club in 1992. A HAM Radio operator since 1964.
Loren's recognition of his life begins with recalling his early days in Wyoming where his dad drilled for oil in Newcastle, Wyoming. Divorce followed and his mother took Loren and his siblings, a brother and sister to South Carolina. Education in South Carolina was poor. In 1937 his father took possession of him and his siblings and moved to Canada. Loren became a very good student in those days and in 1939 the family moved to Spokane. Loren still considers Spokane as home. Graduated from 8th grade in 1940 and rode his bike with a friend through Glacier National Park to Cutback, Montana. His first job was delivering papers for the Spokane Chronicle. Hat Freeman gave him a job making hats. Most of the hats were felt hats. When the war broke out in 1941, Loren realized he needed more education and graduated from high school in three years. He entered Gonzaga University, was drafted into the Coast Guard and schooled in Communications. He was honorably discharged in 1946. From there went to work in his father's insurance business. Went back to college and completed a Dale Carnegie course.
He met the love of his life on a blind date. They married in 1949. He sold his Cadillac to buy Lorna a wedding ring. After the birth of his first daughter Kerrie, returned to Gonzaga University, joined Moore Business Forms and seven months later promoted to Lewiston, Idaho to open a Moore Business Forms store. His daughter Laurie was born in Lewiston. Went into management and was transferred to Yakima. Supervised offices all over eastern Washington and Lewiston, Idaho. Transferred to Seattle and later as District Manager in Everett. Bought a sail boat and raced it in Port Gardner Bay. In 1978 completed the Victoria to Maui race on a 40 ft. sail boat. Sold his boat in 1982 and retired from Moore Business Forms. Started his own small business selling business forms in 17 states. Sold his business.
Loren and Lorna moved to Lake Stevens in 1989. Transferred from the Everett Rotary Club to Lake Stevens Rotary in 1992. Wintered in Palm Springs and Sedona, AZ from 1992-2009. He traveled the Al-Can Highway and Historic Route 66 with fellow Rotarian John Morrison in his 1974 Triumph. Started the GeeWhiz Investment Club and in 2007 started a Rotary Permanent Endowment Fund for Community Service which is worth over $22,000. Treasurer and Quickbooks accountant for four plus groups.
