This Week's Meeting

We are excited to have Andra Watkins as our featured speaker this week. A few years ago she walked the entire Natchez Trace--the roughly 440 mile historic forest trail that connected Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN linking the Cumberland, Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers. She will tell us why she did that and the personal outcome for her.

Hopefully, you have taken me up on my suggestion to read Not Without My Father in preparation of her visit. It describes her walk while her father traveled by car with her. The book is more than a journal of her walk. It tells the story of how she reconnected with her 80 year old father. You can get the book through the Sno-Isle Library system or purchase it at Amazon. Listen in her own words why you should read it.

Impact of Tourism and Sports Tourism

Last Friday's program was Tammy Dunn, the Sports Development Director for the Snohomish County Sports Commission discussing the impact of sports on tourism. Tourism affects everyone and is best described as economic development. In 2014 visitors to Washington State spent $19.5 billion dollars, creating 163,450 jobs and $1.7 billion in local and state tax revenues.

In Snohomish County, tourism amounted to $992.9 million dollars, up 5.7% over last year creating over 10,000 jobs. The average stay for visitors is 2.0 nights with average expenditure of $512.00 per day. Tourism works in Snohomish County. The effect of tourism on Snohomish County is the creation of 10,340 jobs with a payroll of $256.4 million and $19.9 million in local taxes and $48.8 million in state taxes. And, all of this is accomplished without a state tourism office. The Washington Tourism Alliance is not a sustainable organization using a membership-funded model. The Legislature failed to pass or create a state tourism funding program.

Snohomish County Sports Commission - The organization was established in 2003 as a 501c(4) organization and became a 501c(3) organization in 2014. The organization has grown to a staff of three. The SCSC Board of Directors assists the sports marketing staff with resources, referrals, direction and oversight. Goal: The primary goal is to facilitate the development and presentation of sporting events in Snohomish County that provides positive economic impact. The organization works with and supports local sports, state and regional sports and national & international sports activities. One example in 2016 is the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships this coming week-end. There are two Northwest Athletic Conference Colleges in Snohomish County. They are Everett Community College and Edmonds Community College. Professional Sports Teams include the Everett Silvertips Hockey Team, Everett AquaSox baseball and Everett Merchants Baseball. The economic impact from 2007-2015 has been $142.5 million dollars.

Finally, the Snohomish County Sports Commission works with local communities on the development of key sporting events, facility development such as the Monroe High School field, Bottega Fitness Park and the full development of Cavelero Hill County Park's skateboard park and BMX facility at the park.

Tammy has worked for the Snohomish County Sports Commission since 2005. Prior to the sports industry, she worked in the restaurant industry for 20 years in the Puget Sound region. She is active within Snohomish County with our local, state and national sports organizations in bringing sporting events to Snohomish County. Originally from Montana, Tammy is passionate about youth sports and sports tourism industry. Tammy serves on many local organization committees including the National Association of Sports Commissions, Snohomish County Parks Advisory Board, Rotary Club of Everett and Seattle Officials Women's Basketball.

Grade Road Repair

Great News concerning the re-opening of Grade road from our Public Works Director. There has been so much work behind the scenes the last six months to get to this point! Mick sent out this letter recently.

This morning it was discovered that a new section of the embankment has been undermined by about 4 feet and has created a condition that prompt action is require to stabilize this situation. The State Department of Fish andWildlife has issued the City approval to work within a stream to perform temporary repairs. The City has an emergency contract with Marshbank Construction and they have been alerted to mobilize.

Marshbank will be on site on Monday morning to stage equipment and material and setup for the repair work. Actual work is expected to begin on Tuesday. This will include the relocation of the stream away from the toe of the slope and then place larger rocks in the voids under the embankment. This temporary stabilization work is expected to be completed quickly.

For the long term, the City’s Geotech is preparing a permanent repair embankment design that will need State approval. This work will require another approval by the State. Once approved, the City expects to have the permanent work completed this summer and the roadway reopened. This permanent repair work will include work on the sewer main line, construction of a retaining wall, and stream repair and mitigation improvements.

With the recent heavy rainfall events, the City Public Works and Police will be monitoring the roadway this weekend. This is a preventative measure should early action be required by Marshbank.

Sam has visited the site frequently during these initial repairs. He reports: Looked at the Grade Road closure after day one of the temporary repair work done today. With no traffic on the road it is clear the road and hillside are continuing its slide into the creek.

I am thankful we have not allowed traffic on that road as the creek continues to undermine the road and the road has sunk in spots. The temporary repair is to keep the road from continuing its slide into the creek under a special temporary permit issued the other day. Unfortunately, the temporary repairs will not allow traffic yet. However, we can now this summer do permanent repairs (if we get the right permits and sign-offs) to probably and most likely re-open the road late summer or early fall. Things and other plans can change once the area under the road is opened up.

I know for many this news can be frustrating, but believe me when I say two weeks ago it appeared we might have to wait another year or more to open the road. Fixing Grade road will be costly and take more time and effort because of a Salmon bearing stream undermining it. The last week or so has been stressful for many. There is so much work going on behind the scenes that many will never know or hear about. The news so far is good and positive and I wanted to share. I appreciate so many who have been patient in the community as we work hard on this one of many projects. Re-opening Grade road is the utmost priority as long as we can do it legally, safely, and responsibly.

We are thankful that the City has made this a priority and we look forward to a successful completion of the repair. We also thank the residents of the developments both east and west of that area of Grade Road for their patience as they endure the extra vehicular traffic due to the detours.
