Our Club recently sponsored three young adults to participate in the recent District 5050 YAIL Conference.Youth Adventures In Leadership gives participants insight into some of the basics of what it means, and takes, to be a leader: to create a well-rounded individual with increased perspective and enthusiasm for growth, who is able to make informed decisions. We will hear from the participants about their experiences at this week's regular Club meeting. Invite the young people you know to join us on Friday morning.
Contest: We had several submissions to our contest last week regarding the photo at the top of the bulletin and Club website. We will announce the winner at an upcoming meeting.
This week, we concluded our series on Athletics and Education with the final presentation being made by Mike Colbrese, Executive Director of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). The mission of WIAA is to Strengthen all students for life through participation in excellent, fair, safe and accessible activities. The organization was formed in 1905 to create equitable playing conditions between high school sport teams in Washington. We will find out what has been happening in the 110 year old history of WIAA.
WIAA has a small staff of 13 representing 900 schools in Washington State both public and private high school and middle/junior high schools. WIAA is a volunteer non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization responsible for putting member schools into a league which works through a specific district league. There is a relatively easy formula for member school decision making model which starts at the WIAA Executive Board/Staff to the Policy Makers to the Representative Assembly, the latter in charge of the rule making authority. Communications in WIAA is essential. Member dues represent 11.4% of the budget while 54% is raised through state tournament ticket sales. Basketball is the biggest in terms of ticket sales with 12 tournaments throughout the state followed by football and wresting.
Mike Colbrese has served as the Executive Director since 1993. Prior to moving to Washington State, he was the Commissioner of the Wyoming High School Activities Association for six years and before that he was the Assistant Director of the Montana High School Association for five years. Mike is a member of the Rotary Club of Seattle, affectionately known as the Seattle 4 where he serves on their Foundation Board.

Our Cub Scout Pack will be holding its annual Scouting Celebration--the Blue & Gold Banquet--on Saturday, February 21st at the Lake Stevens Fire Department Conference Center. The Banquet not only celebrates the individual achievements of the Cub Scouts--many of whom have earned their Cub Scout rank for this program year--but, also celebrates Scouting in America. The Boys Scouts of America celebrates its 105 Anniversary on February 8th. This year's anniversary happens to fall on Scout Sunday. Scouts that have earned their Religious Emblems awards often have them presented on Scout Sunday at their own places of worship.
The Banquet is a great opportunity for Rotarians to meet the Scouts and thank the volunteer Leaders for their service to the youth of our Cub Scout Pack. We are looking for some members to join James Monroe, our Chartered Organization Representative, at the Banquet. Please let James know if you are able to join him that evening.
The Lake Stevens Rotary Club is pleased to announce that the 2015 Rotary Club Scholarships are now being accepted. The applicants must be Seniors at Lake Stevens High School or a member of the Lake Stevens School District Home Link program.
