The Rotary Club of Lake Stevens congratulates this year's Senior Class on their graduation tonight. 517 students participated in the ceremony held at Xfinity Arena in Everett. This was the largest class ever in the history of the school district. The ceremony began with the procession of students as they entered the arena. Pomp & Circumstance was played by the Lake Stevens High School Viking Band led by Neil Proff.
Amber Dalgleish, 2014-2015 Associated Student Body President and recipient of a 2015 Rotary Scholarship, welcomed the students, faculty, staff and families to the graduating ceremonies.
Three additional students addressed the crowd. The Student Selected Speaker was Jose Gaytan who gave a lively and entertaining dissertation on school life and not to forget the lessons learned. Mackenna Berg was the Staff Selcted Speaker. A highlight of the evening were two songs sung by the High School Choir led by Heidi Forslund. Eric Cahan, Principal of the High School was the emcee. During his remarks he noted that this class was kind. Kind in spirit, kind in heart and kind to the community. Dr. Amy Beth Cook, School District Superintendent, presented the class to the School Board as having completed all requirements set forth by the school district and the State of Washington. After every student received their diploma, Eric Cahan presented two final awards. The Jim Talley Memorial Scholarship was given to Jamie Santos--a recipient of a Rotary Scholarship and the U-Turn Award was given to Tabitha Majestic. Congratulations to both students! Lastly, Senior Class President Roquin Siongco closed out the evening with the traditional moving of the tassel.
At our June 5th meeting, Kim LaFortune and Cathy Lian of the High School Career center told us about the Center and how they help students with options for continuing their education, joining a military service and/or looking at various career and employment opportunities. These are the main services of the Center:
Career Resource Center
College, university, tech/vocational schools, community college information resource center
Work with students of all ages in various classes to help them explore post-secondary options
Coordination of the Viking Experience
Community Service opportunities
They help students use websites designed for researching colleges, universities and trade schools. These sites include WOIS/Washington Occupational Information System, Careerbridge.wa.gov, Collegeboard.com and Petersons.com. The center also provides ways for students to obtain financial help for paying for education including scholarships.
Cathy Lian tracks Community Service hours for students. She encouraged Rotarians to look for ways that students could help out in the community and let her know.She also mentioned that they are seeking employers that will allow students to job shadow. The center includes a job posting board.
Kim coordinates the Beyond High School night at the school in the fall. This is where many educational institutions and military representatives are present to talk to students about life after high school.
This program was the fourth in a once-a-year series about the Lake Stevens School District. We have a speaker lined up for next year already. Make sure you don't miss that one.
