There is a Memorial Service for Dean Franz this Saturday, November 27th, 10:30 am at Elim Lutheran Church in Lake Stevens. There will be a reception and meal afterwards. This is a link to Dean's obituary where you can view a tribute video and leave a message for Debe and Derek.

On Friday morning, there will be a gathering at The Buzz Inn of members want to have breakfast and chat. This is not a formal weekly meeting.

District Governor Bev Harrington's Visit

One of the highlights of any Rotary Club is an in-person visit by the District Governor. On Friday, November 19th, we were privileged to have District Governor Bev Harrington at our Club for our Regular. Assistant District Governor Duane Rhodes introduced the Governor. Bev Harrington was born in San Mateo, California living in the same house until she left for college. Bev was an exchange student in Austria and attended the University of California, Berkeley until marrying and starting a family. Bev and her husband Dick live in Burlington. She joined Rotary in 2005 and was attracted to the organization because of our motto, Service above Self. She is a member of the Paul Harris Society and a Major Donor of the Rotary Foundation.

The major focus of our Rotary International President is what brings us together as Rotarians was emphasized by the Governor. Her brother still lives in California, and she has never seen her brother without him wearing his Rotary pin. She spoke of her early involvement in Burlington. There are five clubs in Skagit County. She was drawn to an article in the newspaper about the contributions these clubs have made to the community. So, she showed up for their Friday morning meeting and the rest is history.

The main concentration of her visit and talk was about the time is now to get the word out to students who will be high school 11th graders in September about applying for the Snohomish County YES team. YES stands for Youth Engaged in Service. The YES brochure says that the YES Program touches many lives through unique local and international service opportunities. Their mission is to provide leadership development opportunities while engaging youth in service both locally and internationally. The cost per Club in Snohomish County would be $2,000 per student. $1,000 offsets the student's $2,500 program fees for training materials, the team building retreat, Youth Adventures in Leadership Conference (YAIL), and so much more.

She also encouraged everyone to register for the District Celebration (aka Conference) next May at Semiahmoo Resort.

This was a fantastic visit by our District Governor and one of the first since the Covid-19 outbreak. Thank you, DG Bev Harrington, for your visit, words of wisdom and leadership.

On Friday, November 19th during District Governor Bev Harrington's visit to our Club, she welcomed our two newest members and game them both their Membership Packets. What a great time to welcome these two new dynamic members to our Club.

Work and Play-Rotarians in Action

Rotarians work hard and play hard. Work Night: Recently, collecting food for the Lake Stevens Food Bank spearheaded by Amy Lewandowski including a street clean up by Kristin Odeggard and two Interact Club officers. Several baskets of food were raised at Haggen Market. Street cleaning occurred along Market Street. Game Night: President Reshal Ploeger organized a Game Night at Meatheads Smokehouse in Lake Stevens. The Lewandowski family was there and took home the game prizes. Fun times were had by all who were there.

Steve Hobbs Day at the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens

Senator Steve Hobbs, a club member is being sworn in as the new Secretary of State today. In honor of this awesome day, the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens has pronounced this Steve Hobbs Day.

Dean Franz

Dean Franz, a strong Rotarian and community spirited friend passed away on Sunday, November 14th after heart surgery the previous Tuesday. Shock can best describe the feelings we all are experiencing over the news of his passing. Dean was deeply involved in the past as the Chair of the Vocational Services Committee. His efforts each year to ensure that our Club Foundation had funds for scholarships for graduating Lake Stevens High School Seniors. Although he decided to let someone else lead the Vocational Services Committee, he helped mentor the new chairperson.

Dean enjoyed being a photographer and was a seasoned financial whiz for our investment club composed mostly of Rotarians. Dean relished time with his family and friends. We will miss his infectious smile which was the center peace and a big part of his demeanor.

Dean has been a Rotarian since June 2005 and was a Civil Engineer with Parsons. Please keep Debe, Derek and Christina in your prayers as they go through their grieving. Dean was special and should be remembered for all that he meant to all of us in Rotary and Lake Stevens.

There will be a Funeral Service on Saturday, November 27, 2021, 10:30 am at Elim Lutheran Church in Lake Stevens. A reception and meal will follow.
