On December 30, the Meeting will be at The Buzz Inn in downtown Lake Stevens. Usually, our Rotary Club Meetings are at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center located at 12309 22nd St NE. We start at 7:30 am. As we celebrate our Century of Service, the Rotary Club of Everett is privileged to host RI President John F. Germ and his wife, Judy, at our January 10 club meeting in Everett. Please join us to hear Mr. Germ’s insights on the victories and challenges that lie ahead for Rotarians as we live in Service above Self.

At our December 30th Meeting, 44th State Legislative District Representative John Lovick, told the members that the upcoming State Legislative session will be one of the hardest ever due to the mandate to fully fund education. The questions are "Where is the money coming from?" "What will we have to give up in order to achieve this goal?" "Will this be accomplished in this session?"
Other issues before the Washington State House and Senate include transportation and social services. Lovick thanked Club President Sam Low and Club Member State Senator Steve Hobbs for their service to the public. He also thanked the members for being invested in the community. Lovick serves on the House Education Committee and House Appropriations Committee. Lovick has a long public service career starting with the US Coast Guard. He then served as a Washington State Patrol Trooper and Sergeant. He also served on the Mill Creek City Council, nine years as our State Representative before serving as Snohomish County Sheriff and then Snohomish County Executive. Thank you Representative Lovick for your visit!
The American Red Cross-Snohomish County chapter is celebrating their 100th Anniversary. Chuck Morrison joined us on December 16th to give us an update on the American Red Cross-Snohomish County chapter. This year's Hero's Breakfast raised $327,000. Chuck discussed going forward over the next 100 years instead of reflecting on the last 100 years. OSO created such a huge impact on our area on communities like Darrington, OSO and Arlington which continues today. Recently, the Darrington community North Counties Family Services through a American Red Cross grant was able to buy the distinctive wood building that was vacant for the past 13 years is across from the Darrington IGA store.
Washington landslide recovery continues and requires financial assistance, family counseling, school counselor, community PTSD education, a new food bank and preparedness investment are all part of the American Red Cross - Snohomish County Chapter. Since Darrington sits below inactive Glacier Peak, involvement of the North County Family Services center is very critical.
Food bank assistance is vital in all areas of the Chapter. The American Red Cross has launched a home fire campaign with the goal of reducing the number of home fires and deaths. Chuck commented that seven times a day someone dies in a home fire and every 40 minutes a home fire begins. The basic issue is the lack of smoke detectors. Local campaign aimed at installing 821 in 2016 and the goal for 2017 is 906. There were 121 single-multiple family disasters in FY 2016. Other services provided by the American Red Cross include Disaster cycle services; preparedness, response, recovery as well as services to the armed forces, emergency communication services and reconnection workshops. There are so many more programs supported and sponsored by the American Red Cross that is critical to all of us around the United States and our area in particular due to potential landslides.
Our guest speaker on December 23rd, was Judge George Bowden, a long-time member of the Rotary Club of Everett. Judge Bowden announced that John Germ, President, Rotary International would be the guest speaker at their meeting on January 10th. This is really great opportunity to hear from the leader of Rotary International. Space is limited to 450 and reservation deadline listed earlier in our bulletin is January 6th.
In celebration of the 100th centennial year of the Rotary Club of Everett, the club has launched 5 separate initiatives. One of those initiatives sponsored by the Club's World Service Committee is a planned youth project trip returning to Dajabon, Dominican Republic to help area residents construct and maintain large commercial gardens. The large "greenhouses" will protect crops from the elements and insects and allow the project participants to provide a food source for their families and community and potential income source by selling some of their harvests at market. The Club anticipates taking 12 Everett youth and 8-10 adults for an educational, cultural and work project trip over the Spring Break for the Everett School District. Seattle Mariner Nelson Cruz's cousin is the County Council for the area.
Another one of the initiatives involves three Peace Corp volunteers in a partnership with Rotary for a large sustaining on-going project. Another involves ecological stove construction and clean water projects currently under consideration.
