This Week's Meeting

Our speaker this week will be our own Randy Celori. He will tell us about school security in general and what is being done in our School District to keep our students and staff safe.

In preparation of our visit by Andra Watkins on April 8th, I recommend that you read her book Not Without My Father which tells the story of her walk of the Natchez Trace while her father traveled by car with her. The book is more than a journal of her walk. It tells the story of how she reconnected with her 80 year old father. You can get the book through the Sno-Isle Library system or purchase it at Amazon.

Cocoon House

The Cocoon House is a symbol of "every child needs a home." Cassie Franklin, CEO of the Cocoon House and a fellow Rotarian from the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club was our guest speaker this past week. Ironically and somewhat disturbing for most of us, is the average age of a homeless youth is 14 1/2 years old.

The majority of the kids coming to the Cocoon House are there because of violence in their homes. One example of a young man who lived in the woods by himself for over 2 years. After months of getting him back into a normal routine living environment, he graduate from high school and now has his own apartment. Another example was a family selling their daughter into sex trafficking. Shame on the parents! She got so scared on the streets of Seattle, she eventually asked for help and is a work in progress.

The Everett Lions Club bought the first housing unit which was turned over to the Cocoon House. The Cocoon House has transitional housing in Everett, Monroe and now Arlington with 5 rooms for young teen moms. The Cocoon House mission is to empower young people, families and the community to break the cycle of homelessness through outreach, housing and prevention. For the past 25 years, the Cocoon House has been the only agency in Snohomish County exclusively serving at-risk and homeless young people and their families. There are 3,100 students that are homeless in Snohomish County schools and over 5,000 homeless youth die per year.

Donors are needed to continue the support so that homeless teens can have a safe place to live, food to eat and the opportunity to change their lives. Donations make the Cocoon House possible. Check out their website at www.cocoonhouse.org. On Thursday, April 14th from Noon-1:30 pm the Cocoon House's Butterfly Graduation will be held. Tickets are $20. Donations of $150 are being encouraged. The Butterfly Graduation is a special opportunity to recognize and honor the accomplishments of the Cocoon House young adults who have courageously overcome unimaginable life experiences. Come hear their stories.

Classification Talks

Two weeks ago we enjoyed Classification Talks by two of our newer members Cindy Mahan and Marcus Tageant. Here is an overview of their comments:

Marcus: Home grown in Lake Stevens. After graduating from Lake Stevens High School, Marcus joined the Marines. Part of his Marine experience was in Saudia Arabia. He went to WSU on the GI bill. While attending WSU, Marcus managed an apartment complex. During that experience he changed his degree to real estate management. He was recruited by a real estate firm in Bellevue and after a short tenure opened his own real estate firm in Lake Stevens and manages 400 properties with separate Homeowner Association groups for 50 clients. Marcus is married to Becky and enjoys golfing, travel and visiting their property in Arizona. Serving on the City Council is another way of serving the community.

Cindy: grew up on Maltby before there was a famous cafe there. Graduated from Monroe High School and went to EvCC. She was married for 20 years and has 2 daughters, a step son and one grandchild. Started a cleaning business and when her sister decided to leave being a detective, they started a business together staging homes with another friend. Once the economy dipped she moved on to her current profession with Sherwood Community Services moving up to investor relations. Cindy likes to hike and hang out with her kids.

Classification talks are about getting to know your fellow Rotarians on a more personal basis. We want to thank Marcus and Cindy for their presentations and appreciate their service to our Rotary Club.
