Jack Johnson will be the featured speaker at this week's meeting. He is Vice Chair of the Lake Stevens Youth Advisory Committee. The Committee was created by the City Council in June of last year. The group's mission is to young people with a voice and influence in city government issues. Click this link to learn more about the YAC.

YMCA of Snohomish County, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Inspirational Weekend

On Friday, January 17th, our Club listened to the YMCA of Snohomish County honoring and celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting the 1st Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Inspirational Weekend from January 14-17, 2022. Originally the event was to be a breakfast at the Angel of the Winds Arena but the current situation with Covid turned it into a virtue presentation on YouTube.

The hour-long program offered the following: the program started with opening remarks by Matt Reinhard, Chair of the Snohomish County YMCA with an opening comment. We humbly acknowledge, with due respect, the land in which today's event is taking place is the territory of the People of the Salish Sea and concluded the statement by introducing Mr. Mel Sheldon, Member, Tulalip Tribes Board of Directors commenting that Dr. King who led by example for voting and civil rights along with honoring the Tribal Elders who embraced that role.

Dr. Janice Greene followed with comments offering a prayer for this day. Dr. Greene spoke of the value of the YMCA and of the role models who would help young boys and girls. Senator John Lovick spoke of celebrating the 93rd birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and the impact of social unrest that he addressed. Senator Lovick spoke of the 3 movies he watched this past week leading up to his birthday. The movies were Selma for about the 25th time, and 42 about Jackie Robinson and the movie Hidden Figures. I just finished reading Walking in the Wind by Congressman John Lewis. He pays tribute to the broad shoulders that he gets to stand on every day of his life.

The YMCA is a safe place for kids. It's in their DNA to be a place for young kids. The YMCA was founded 177 years ago as a Leadership Development Program. Big Brothers Big Sisters will have a presence at all 6 Y's. The next speaker was Payton Tune, CEO, of the YMCA of Snohomish County and is from Texas. He has been in Snohomish County for the past 2 years and enjoys the winter months here. Mr. Tune talked about the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Bishop Desmond Tutu who he had the pleasure of meeting within his ventures. The next speaker was Phyllis Turner-Brim, Immediate-Past Chair, YMCA Board of Directors. What are you doing for others was a quote often used by Dr. King. Looking for role models in how to live my life. Her parents served people, neighborhoods, family, and the community. Turner-Brim spoke of her dedication to the Y that has transformed her life and is a direct result of her parents' actions and her upbringing from their actions.

Kyle Strand appointed Chairman of the Rotarians In Action Committee

President Reshal Ploeger announced the appointment of Kyle Strand as the Chairman of the Rotarians In Action Committee. The committee will be a sub-committee of the Community Services Committee chaired by Brian Rewis. The Rotarians In Action Committee meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm usually at the Brian Rewis' Farmers Insurance Office. Congratulations Kyle!
