Washington State Chapter Alzheimer's update

Hazel Borden, who is the Snohomish County Community Outreach Coordinator for the Alzheimer's Association of Washington State was our guest speaker September 16th and explained that there is no difference between Alzheimer's and dementia. To put it in prospective: the organization's VISION is a World without Alzheimer's and to eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance the care and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
Hazel talked about the importance of Support Groups who provide a caring place for emotional support to discuss caregiver challenges. She commented that women are more likely to be affected by these diseases.The Alzheimer's organization offers educational programs as well as Advocacy. She mentioned their yearly visit to the legislature as a mean of keeping the issue before state lawmakers and the public.
The Alzheimer's group offers a 24/7 helpline that connects callers to programs, services and local resources every day of the year. Medic alert plus safe return is extremely important in case of an individual with Alzheimer's or dementia goes wandering. The Alzheimer's Association is the world's largest private non-profit fundraiser for Alzheimer's research. Care Consultation is a program connecting on a one-on-one basis with a professional care consultant for personalized assessment, care planning and decision making all available through the organization.
