Skateboard Park update

For more than ten plus years our Club has promoted the construction of a skateboard park in Lake Stevens to meet the growing needs of our community youth and young adult skate boarders. Now, our goal is in sight. Dave Somers, County Councilman position #5 representing our area and the current chairman of the Council updated our group on the Skateboard Park. Dave and his wife live on 15 acres outside of Monroe.
A master plan for the Cavalero Hill Park was recently added to the County's Master Plan. The property was purchased in 2000-2001 with the idea that it would be turned into a multi-use park for the citizens of Lake Stevens and Snohomish County. Although the park is county property, an agreement with the City of Lake Stevens has been initiated as a joint venture community project. Design concept "Request for Proposal" (RPF) have been released and skateboard park developers have until October 30th to submit their proposals. Cavalero Hill Park will be developed in three phases. The 1st phase of the park will include the construction of a Skateboard facility, followed by a kids play area. Construction to start in 2016 and open in 2017. The skateboard park financial commitment is $650,000 and $100,000 has been allocated for 2016. The total financial package from the county and city including state funds is $1.6 million dollars. The full cost of the park when completed including a BMX facility, kids play areas, picnic areas etc. will cost around $29 million. Restrooms could be added in the 2nd phase and retail such as coffee and snack shops could be added in the 3rd phase which would generate revenues from these leases. Somers stated that the City of Lake Stevens has been a great partner in this whole process.

On other issues, Somers updated the group on the status of the Courthouse project. The need for a new courthouse is due to the current building lacking seismic standards. The building is out of date, with the need for repairs. The project will not impact the Mission building. Plus, there is no expansion potential. The review process started in 2006 and they were unsuccessful in getting it on the 2008 general election ballot. Currently the council is looking for a much cheaper alternative.
