Sheriff Trenary
Our Rotary was proud to have Snohomish County Sheriff Ty Trenary speak to us April 25th. We are also proud of the fact that Ty is a fellow Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Everett. He started as a member of the Rotary Club of Stanwood-Camano where he was honored to be recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Ty is the chief law enforcement officer for the County and was able to share with us insights to the county’s growing heroin problem (see related article by Gary O'Rielly, March 31st, on Commander Pat Slack's visit to our Club) and his tireless efforts at reforming our county jail. He also gave us an update to the tragic disaster in Oso.
Ty joined the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office in 1991. He quickly found that he loved working in patrol and was assigned as one of Snohomish County’s first community policing deputies. He worked with neighborhoods, communities, and businesses to help reduce crime and provide access to the Sheriff’s Office. Ty was also directly involved in creating a new program for youth called Spring Break at the Beach. This program partnered with Snohomish County Human Services and the Rotary Club of Everett to help high school students address problems and issues in their community.
Ty was first promoted in 2000 when he was one of the first groups selected to serve as a Master Patrol Deputy. Ty was then promoted to Sergeant a year later where he supervised large patrol squads in both North and South Snohomish County. He also supervised the North Precinct Investigation’s Unit in 2002. In 2005, Ty was selected to serve as the training Sergeant and member of the Organizational Development Team. He was instrumental in supervising the agency’s most recent successful accreditation and also in developing new strategies to streamline the hiring processes for future employees. Ty was promoted to Lieutenant in 2008 and was quickly selected to serve in the City of Stanwood as their contract police chief for nearly four years. In 2012, Ty was promoted to Captain and was moved back to the Sheriff’s Office Operations Bureau. Ty was responsible for patrol operations in North and East Snohomish County. In addition, he was tasked with managing the agency’s contract cities as well as directed patrol and the K-9 Unit. Ty has successfully managed large groups of both commissioned and civilian employees. In July 2013 Ty Trenary was appointed Sheriff by the County Council when his predecessor resigned to take the position of County Executive..
