On Monday, September 11th, American Legion Post 181 hosted a Remembrance Service at Lake Stevens Fire Department Station 81 in downtown Lake Stevens. Speakers included Mayor John Spencer, Police Commander Jeff Beazizo, Fire Chief Kevin O'Brien, former American Legion Washington State Commander Loren Sperry and about a dozen 4th grade students from Mount Pilchuck Elementary. The students each briefly shared their definition of a hero. Many mentioned their parents who serve in the military or are police officers and firefighters.

Many community members attended including Rotarians and Kiwanians. Savannah A, a student at Cavelero Mid High sang the national anthem. The ceremony concluded with the long-standing fire service tradition of the ringing of a fire bell. The bell was rung in a series a five rings repeated five times to represent the thousands of people that lost their lives 16 years ago in New York City, Washington, D.C. and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
