Although the Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic is not a club event, four of our members participated in this past week-end event. The event is produced by Cascade Bicycle Club and sponsored by Group Health. The Classic was held on Saturday-Sunday, July 14-15, 2012. Club members Dave and Tracy DeLorm, John Huber and our honorable Sergeant at Arms, David Johnson all rode in the ride this year.
Over 10,000 riders from 40 states participate in annual bicycle ride which is now in its 33rd year. There were 7,740 Washingtonians with 2,049 from Seattle and ,1195 Oregon riders. Wow...26,000 sandwiches, 35,000 cookies, 43,000 snack bars and treats, 11,000 fig bars, the riders consumed 16,000 bananas, 10,000 oranges, 9500 grapes and which of our riders comsumed the most. Only the riders know. Did Johnson ride to the finish? Did he hold up his team? Members want to know.
You should know that Club Member James Monroe was actively involved with this event for 15 years and helped it grow to the 10,000 rider limit. He served in a variety of capacities in Operations and Logistics and even served as Event Director in 1994. Has he riden in the ride? Members want to know this also.
Anyway, Congratulations. This is a great feat. By the way, the oldest rider was 85. One rider has participated in all 33 rides and is now 71. I guess some of us elders have no excuses left.
