October Club Assembly

At the Club Assembly October 19, 2013, Members were updated on the current status of the Club including a report on the budget for the current year. The goal with the budget is to ensure that all of the funding for future budgets is in place before the start of each Rotary Year. The fundraisers are being set up to support not only this current year but also for next year.

Poinsettia order forms are out. All members are encouraged to get as many sales as possible and visit other Clubs.

There was also a report from the Bikes for Tykes Committee. There will only be two sizes of bicycles--16" and 20" wheels. Requests for bikes will be handled through the Lake Stevens Family Center.

The big event of the meeting though was the presentation of funds to the School District specifically designated to support the services and needs of the homeless students in the District. First, Larry Jubie, representing District 5050, presented the Club with a check in the amount of $10,000 matching the Club's fundraising of $10,000. Then President Scott Smith presented a $20,000 check to Dr. Amy Beth Cook, Superintendent of the School District. Dr. Cook thanked the Club for the support. Then Arlene Hulten, Director of Communications for the School District gave an update on the support that the students will receive. Currently, there are just over 70 students that are classified as homeless. This could be that they are living in a shelter with or without the family, in a a vehicle with or without the family or couch surfing. The federal McKinney-Vento Act requires that supprt be provided for homeless students. this support includes but, is not limited to tranpsortation to and from school, meals, clothing, supplies, fees, trips, etc. Our school district spends $80,000 a year alone on transportation costs.
