Our guest this past Friday was Malissa Weatherbie, Principal at Mt. Pilchuck Elementary School in Lake Stevens. Malissa was our guest talking about the playgrounds needs of Mt. Pilchuck Elementary School and the Special Needs program at the school and in the District.. The current playground is 12 years old. Accessibility is important especially for children with disabilities. Currently the school is lacking a successful surface for children with disabilities and a need for a playground that is accessible for all children. She acknowledged the new surface at North Cove park can be used by children with special needs including children in wheelchairs.
The recent loss of the Kids Oasis is huge but in the long run that could be an opportunity to help the kids in the Life Skills program. Specifically she wanted to talk about the Special Needs programs in the Lake Stevens School District. Each school has programs for Special Needs children and Mt. Pilchuck has the Life Skills Program. The Life Skills programs has 24 students in the program. More details were given on the program.

Malissa indicated there is still a lot to do to determine a new playground, the funding, involving the school's PTA and partners.  he will keep our Club updated on the planning, fundraising and more as they proceed through the process.
