Monterrico Clinic & Educational Center Update - Dedication

The Rotary Club of Lake Stevens...Healing the Children, Oregon and Western Washington Chapter....Rotary Club of Vista Hermosa....Centro Cristiano Cultural de Guatemala and Guatemala Village Health announce the dedication of The Monterrico Community Clinic and Education Center in Monterrico, Guatemala will be dedicated on Saturday, October 8, 2011 from 10:30am to 2pm. What a wonderful, wonderful conclusion to a major campaign by our club and our many partners. It takes a village has been used for sometime now, but it does apply to the new Community and Education Center in Monterrico, Guatemala.

Our club is deeply involved in an international collaboration that will help children in rural Guatemala access health care as well as providing education and resources to help their families gain new skills and improve their lives.
Monterrico is on the Pacific Coast about two and a half hours southwest of Guatemala City with an area population of about 22,800 people who live primarily at a subsistence level. Most are working poor are the working poor with no sewers or toilets, no systems for water purification or sanitation, no garbage collection and no access to health care. The nearest public clinic is two hours away but they lack transportation or the ability to pay medical fees. Therefore they simply do not access medical care for themselves or their children. Relatively isolated geographically, few non-profit groups are working in this area. This is the first Rotary sponsored project in this community.
The purpose of the Monterrico Clinic and Education Center is to increase the overall health status of the Guatemala people who live in the surrounding area by offering basic health care for all ages including immunizations, a pharmacy, a laboratory, prenatal care, newborn and pediatric care, adult care, and dental care.
The clinic will begin serving the community as soon as basic construction of the clinic is completed in late May, or as funds become available. Phase Two will provide medical, dental and computer equipment including ultrasound and surgical equipment. Phase Three will add a thatched roof to the building to create a teaching and community center and will provide the organic gardening on an adjacent property.
We wish to thank the Rotary Clubs who have partnered with our club thus far. They are: Vista Hermosa, Guatemala City; Alderwood-Terrace; Everett; Everett port Gardner; Fidalgo Island; Northshore; Gary Indiana and the Legacy Foundation and Sunriver, Oregon.
