Lake Stevens Police Update

This speaker on July 13, 2012 was Randy Celori, Chief of Police and Club Member who updated members on the Lake Stevens Police Department. The Chief started his presentation by talking about the Mission of the Department- "The Lake Stevens Police Department is committed to a professional partnership with our community by providing excellence in safety, service and education."
The Patrol Division consist of four squads: 1 Sergeant and 3 officers working 12 hour shifts. The Investigation Division is responsible for investigating major felonies and major drug crimes. The Investigation Division consists of 1 Detective Sergeant and 2 Detectives. There are currently 42 opened investigations. Fourteen crimes against children. The Traffic/Warrant Division is responsible for enforsement of speed and other traffic laws; investigates seious injury and fatal collisions; Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) and FUGITIVE Apprehension Team. The School Resource Officers are responsible for Lake Stevens High School and Cavelero Mid-High by providing response to school related issues; liaison between the students and law enforcement and a member of the Safe Schools Program.
The Administration consists of Customer Service, Records and Property & Evidence. Customer Service includes the phones, provides news releases, passports and bike registration. Records accounts for 2,998 cases entered in 2011. Public Disclosure requests, fingerprinting, concealed Pistol Licenses, Protection Order Entry, Filing and Maintenance. Property and Evidence account for 2,427 pieces of evidence in 2011 and Property Technicians manages the intake, testing, purging and returning of all property.
Chief Celori outlined the Officer/Citizen ratio; Incidence and Case numbers; Response times with the average for Lake Stevens in 2011 of 6.08 mnutes; outlined the Crime Data involving homicide, rape and roberry from 2006 to 2011; as well as the crime rate percentage per citizen for 2011 for surrounding communities. Major cases included apprehension/extradition of a child rapist; Chase Bank robbery arrest; Rite Aid robbery arrest; Drug seizure - $1 million and felony drug/seizures of eight vehicles and $11,000 plus.
The Department involvement in the community includes: Neighborhood watch; Safe Schools Program; Riskwatch; Police Explorers; Boating Education classes; National Night Out Against Crime; community presentations, Neighborhood Dispute Resolution as well as sponsorship of Explorer Post 87--a division of the Boy Scouts of America. The Post is the only Law Enforcement program in the southeast part of the County. Currently there are 13 members from Lake Stevens and Snohomish. The Explorers learn about what it takes to be a law enforcement officer. Many in the program go on to become sworn officers.
We are fortunate to have a well managed, well run professional police department in our community as well as having the Chief as a member of our Club.
