
Building Community-DNA Skate School presented by Derek (Lucky D) and Aslie (Ash, Lil' Shredder) on Friday, May 1st at our regular weekly meeting. Derek is a lifelong skater, professional athletic and community advocate. Ash is the voice of reason and body healer. She is an occupational therapist.
Their community is made up of Washington Groups from Seattle Weekly Skate session of friendship, Wednesday Night Skaters, DNA Skate School, Seattle Distance Skating Clubs, Beginners, Community in Bowls and many skate journeys.
Community Events include Spicy Salmon Roll which is a four day event with multiple routes and gatherings; NW Skate Fest which is in collaboration with the Oregon Community for a two week festival; WNS Feat which is a weekend celebration for all weekly wheel communities; Summer in the City aka, Salty Sea Days an Everett annual celebration; Emerald City Skates which is a monthly celebration, NorthWest Shred Tour, a annual weekend celebration and Seattle Skates Beginners Meetups and is a annual summer introduction.
Both explained the importance and “why it matters” is physical + mental health; confidence + resilience and Real World Social connecting. Their vision is free year round outdoor covered spaces. Skateparks with shelter and cover to protect from all elements of PNW and provides options for more after school programs plus provides wheel community with year round access leading to consistent and sustainable growth. Bothell is in the process of building an 18,000 sq ft skatepark & 11,000 sq ft roof. Our skatepark is uncovered and 16,000 sq ft. DNA Skate School is an LLC vs being a non-profit.
