Lisa Gallucci from the Lynnwood Rotary Club spoke to our us about "Dictionaries for 3rd Graders" . The program is sponsored by District 5030 for all of its Clubs. Lisa talked about raising her two children to use the dictionary throughout their school life. She said she has twelve dictionaries in her home and thinks that when her children have their own children that they will encourage them to use the dictionary.
District 5030 supplies the dictionaries to their Clubs at a cost of $10-12 each. The Lynnwood Rotary Club partnered with Beverly Elementary School and distributed dictionaries to three classrooms. The cost to her club was $4,000. Lynnwwod did discover that the Kiwanis and Exchange Clubs give dictionaries to local elementary schools. Teachers at Beverly Elementary ask the 3rd graders to leave the dictionaries at school during the school year but allow them to take them home at the end of the school year.
Assistant District Governor Doug Newman told our club members that the Marysville Noon and Sunrise Clubs have dictionary programs with local schools.
Other programs that Lisa felt worthwhile to pursue was "WOW" (Women of Wisdom) which confronts the issue of bullying in the middle schools and another one was the "Clothes for Kids" program. The WOW program involves speakers who have been bullied as well as those that have led the stop bullying effort.
Thanks Lisa for giving us such a wonderful program.
