Cub Scout Pack Visits Club
At our November 11th Meeting, Scouts and Leaders from Cub Scout Pack 88 visited us. Our Rotary Club has sponsored this Pack since the inception of the Pack in 1994. They primarily serve Glenwood Elementary School and the South Lake Stevens area. The Scouts opened the meeting by presenting the colors and leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. After regular business, the 50/50 drawing (no winner) and Happy Bucks, James Monroe made a formal presentation of the annual Charter to the Club. The presentation involved the adult leaders, the Cub Scouts, our Club's representative to Scouting, Scott Smith, and current President Jim Steinruck who accepted the Charter. James then introduced Richelle Cantu who is the Pack Committee Chair.
Richelle reviewed the current status of the Pack- they have 22 registered boys, twice the number of one year ago. There are boys in the first second and third grade groups called Dens. The Pack is excited because there are boys waiting in the wings, so to speak, for the next several years. In two years there will be at least one group for each grade (1-5) and therefore a full Pack. So far this year, the boys have held a Pinewood Derby, a Raingutter Regatta, attended Cub Scout Day Camp at nearby Flowing Lake County Park (see accompanying photograph), participated in the Children's Parade at Aquafest and went to Fire Mountain Scout Camp last month for a day outing. Plans for the future include the Blue & Gold Banquet in February and other exciting events. Richelle reminded all Rotarians that they are welcome to come to any Pack Meetings and she thank ed the Club for their continued support including the recent popcorn product sale. It is because of the Club's support and purchase of popcorn that the Pack was able to exceed the goal set by the local Scout District. The Scouts will be rewarded with a party that includes a bounce house!
James wrapped up the presentation by thanking the Pack Leaders and Scouts for coming to the meeting and by thanking the Club for their support. In response to a uniform display board that James had brought, Dave Johnson asked a question about the Webelos uniform. Webelos is the older boy program of Cub Scouts for 4th and 5th graders. Dave said that when he was a Cub Scout oh so many years ago the uniform for Webelos was blue. James confirmed that this was in fact the case. But, now, Webelos Scouts have a choice as to which color shirt to wear--either the traditional Cub Scout blue shirt or the khaki shirt the same as Boy Scouts wear. Very often parents will present a khaki shirt to their sons at the Blue & Gold Banquet during their 4th grade year. One of the purposes of Cub Scouting is to get the boys ready for Boy Scouts and what better way then to have them wear the uniform of the Boy Scouts.
