2014 Scholarships

Our program on this day was to present scholarships to graduating Seniors of the High School. Aidan Quigley is President of the ASB at the the school as well as President of the School's National Honor Society. He is a Gold Scholar and has taken numerous advanced placement (AP) courses--five as a Junior alone--on his way to a 3.9 GPA. He will be attending the University of California-Berkeley this fall to study biomedical engineering with a minor in Middle East history.

Stacey Van Dyke has been very busy in and out of school. She is ative in the FCCLA at the school, state and national levels, German Club, Safe Ride Program, Big Viking/Little Viking program, and Link Crew. She has volunteered at Cascade Valley Hospital; works two part-time jobs; been on three mission trips through her church; is active in her church's Youth Group and serves as a Peer Minister at her church. Stacey also has taken numerous AP classes and has a 3.9 GPA and will be attending the University of Portland this fall to earn a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Nursing. She is the recipient of the first Rotary Club of Lake Stevens Sam Low Scholarship.

Yvette Herrera stated during her interview that the hardest part of high school was coming out of her shell. She shared that she used to be very shy and quiet. Well, she has certainly overcome that. She is active in FCCLA--also at the school, state and national levels--the French Club, Link Crew, the Wind Ensemble, the Marching Band, and the Big Viking/Little Viking program. She is also active in her church Youth Group, plays flute with the worship team and helps with food drives. She tutors local students, has helped with the Relay For Life and Calling For Kids. She, too, has taken numerous AP courses. One of the letters of recommendation recieved for Miss Herrera stated "She is an outstanding young woman with many goals and accomplishments already in her life. She is very conscientious, resourcefule, self-motivated and thorough. Her positive attitude and work ethic is a way of life for all of us to emulate. All in all, she is without a doubt one of the finest high school students I have known and one I think is destined to succeed at whatever she does." She will be attending Molley College this fall to earn her degree in nursing. Molloy is one of a handfull of colleges inthe United States that has a Navy Nursing program. After she earns her degree, Miss Herrera will be serving in the US Navy as a nurse. She will be the first in her extended family to attend college and earn a degree. We are very excited for her.

Ria Montenegro--LSHS's Student of the Month of October--has a goal of starting her own graphics design company. Her path towards that goal has taken her through the marketing program at the school. She is also very active in the DECA program at school. In fact, she is the Chapter President. She's also busy with ASB work, was the head of the Prom Committee last year, is a member of the National Honor Society, is a Gold Scholar and has competed in national DECA competitions--having recently returned from this year's competition in Altanta, GA. She was recognized as the Washington State DECA Emerging Leader. She will be attending Western Washington University for a major in Business Adminsitration with a marketing concentration. Once a Viking, always a Viking! First though she has one more task to take care of. She was selected by her classmates to represent them at this year's graduation ceremony as the Student Speaker. Congratulations, Ria!

Congratulations to all of our scholarship recipients. We hope to hear from them in the coming years on how their education and careers have worked out. A total of $5,000 was given away. Thank you to this year's Scholarship Committee.
