Where is Monterrico?

 Located on the Pacific coast of Guatemala, the community of Monterrico is populated by the working poor. The villages in the surrounding area have no sewers or toilets, and no systems for water purification or sanitation. There is no garbage collection. The villages consist of 22,800 people living primarily at a subsistence level.

Why Build a Clinic?
 Less than 10 percent of Monterrico's people have access to health care. The nearest public clinic is about one and a half hours away and is staffed only intermittently by a nurse. The nearest public hospital is two hours away in the opposite direction. To meet the health care needs of these people, the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens & Granite Falls in 2009 has launched a campaign to raise $85,000 to construct a medical and dental clinic and education center in Montererrico.

The Community in Guatemala

The local Guatemalan community has been closely involved in planning this clinic, primarily through the efforts of the Centro Cristiano Cultural of Guatemala, (CCCG) a non-profit based in Guatemala that supports the many health and education needs of the Guatemalan community. The CCCG is partnering with Healing the Children of Oregon and Western Washington, and has the endorsement of the Rotary Club of Vista Hermosa, Guatemala City. They will work in conjunction with the local Ministry of Health to provide the following services:
  • Immunizations
  • Prenatal newborn and pediatric care
  • Pharmacy Dental Procedure rooms
  • Laboratory

Included in the facilities are an education center for teaching midwifery, public health, and workplace and economic devel-opment training. Plans are also underway to eventually add a birthing center, acute care beds and a surgery suite. The community in Guatemala is ready to pro-vide the labor to build the clinic, but they do not have the money to fund construction of the facilities. That is why we are asking for financial support.

    The Clinic and Educational Center is a joint project of Healing the Children, the University of Washington Network of Family Medicine Residency Programs, Centro Cristianon Culturalidad de Guatemala, and Rotary International.
