Matching Grant #60181, Hydroponics Project, Mexico
We learned of the nutritional and food needs of poor families living in the region of Metepec, Mexico when Lake Stevens/Granite Falls Rotary Club members visited there in 2006. Club members met with local Rotarians while helping deliver wheelchairs purchased for distribution through the Wheelchair Foundation. Discussions led to the opportunity for service when it was learned the nutrition of poor families and children could be significantly improved by teaching them to grow foods hydroponically in greenhouses, providing them with self-sufficiency and a sustainable food source.
In partnership with the Rotary Club of Metepec, Mexico, we were awarded a Matching Grant of $5118.00. Funds were disbursed in April 2007. The project is expected to be complete by January 2009. The Matching Grant includes contributions from Lake Stevens/Granite Falls Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Metepec, Mexico, the Rotary Club of Monarca de Toluca, Mexico, the Rotary Club of Gaillac, France, Rotary International Districts 5050 and 4170, and The Rotary Foundation.
The first of several planned greenhouses in the region has been built at the Instituto Technologica de Toluca, located in Metepec, Mexico. A training curriculum and program for the students is being implemented. Upon graduation students will have skills necessary to grow products hydroponically in their home communities, bringing increased nutrition and sustainable food sources for these poorest of families.
