Our annual fundraiser is the Great Stilly Duck Dash on the 4th of July! Tickets went on sale on May 14 for a chance to win cash prizes. Funds generated support many projects in Arlington. Watch for the groundbreaking and dedication of the Pump Track at Jensen Park, a Duck Dash-funded project with partners the Stillaguamish Tribe and Amazon. See your favorite Rotarian for tickets.

At our evening meeting on May 21, Kevin Raymond introduced Eva Reynolds, a sophomore at Arlington High School, who our club is sponsoring as an International Exchange Student.

Ndengelwa Sustainable Water Project

The chair of our club's Rotary Foundation Committee international services subcommittee, Barney Petersen, gave us an update on the project.  It is a project started by Joan Tilton, and he is happy that it is progressing nicely.  We are partnering with the Rotary Club of Bungoma.  A recent site visit involved Rotarians from that club, our representative John Simiyu, and representatives from the St Thaddeus Ndengelwa Secondary School.

Let the Ticket Sales Begin!

At our meeting on May 14, Jennifer kicked off the ticket-selling phase of the Great Stilly Duck Dash 2026.  But before she unveiled this year's shirt and tickets. Dave zeroed in on the “why” by giving the members a PowerPoint presentation on some of the things we have funded in the past and, of course, the future Pump Track.  In the presentation, he pointed out that we are not only “People of Action” but also a “Club of Action.”

Kids have been the primary focus of the Duck Dash, as it was originally created to raise funds to build the Boys and Girls Club. The playground and splash pad, which Dave referred to as the “crown jewels,” were a club project funded by Duck Dash.  The city projects that ground breaking for the pump track will occur next month, with a dedication and ribbon cutting on July 20.  Our club has committed $250,000 to the project, with funds generated by the Great Stilly Duck Dash.  It will be at Jensen Park close to where there is playground equipment that was constructed as a joint project with our club, the Lions, and the Kiwanis Clubs.

Epic Day of Service

Our club spearheaded a second annual “Epic Day of Service” on May 16.  Members of the Rotary and Lions Clubs and other volunteers assembled in the storeroom at Grocery Outlet to divide into teams to provide service at Haller and Terrace Parks and Arlington Cemetery.  To see an album of photos taken at the three locations, click HERE.

Our Club Well Represented

Thirteen of our members, some with guests, attended the conference in Harrison Hot Springs.  Although biased, it was a good conference but it didn't hold a candle to the 2025 District Conference which was planned and implemented by members of the Rotary Club of Arlington.

It was an anniversary, of sorts, for last year's conference co-chair, Jola Barnett, and the MC of last year's conference, Sean Hogan.  It was the first time they met in person, and to say they hit it off, is an understatement.  Because of the “Magic of Rotary”, they are getting married at the end of July. Here is a photo of the happy couple taken Saturday night at this year's conference:

Jola & Sean

Highlights of the conference involving our members, in addition to Jola's dating anniversary, are that Carla was a one of the presenters regarding food insecurity, Lee Harman was there with Miss Vicky and received the Rotary International Service Above Self Award, IPDG Dave Duskin was honored with the Goldfinch Most Valuable District Rotarian Award, Rick Olson was the audio visual technician, and DGE Kathleen Olson was able to promote her plans for the Engagement Initiative Pilot Project 2026-2027 in lieu of a District Conference.

Here are a few photos from the conference.  More are in an album:

Dealing with Storms

Our program on May 7 was a presentation by Kellie Stickney, Lead Communication Specialist,  and Brett Smith (photo above), the North County Operations Manager from the PUD, who discussed storm preparedness and response strategies. PUD operations have been consolidated at a site just south of the Boys & Girls Club.  The Stanwood and Arlington administration offices have been closed, but the yards may still be used for staging.

The Newest Members of the Order of the Duck!

Our April 30 meeting focused on selecting our duck mascots, Splishy and Splashy, for the 2026 duck season.  As is the tradition, there is much tension in the room as members who have never been ducks are teased by the reigning ducks, in this case, Dave and Katy.

Is the President exempt?
You wouldn't dare!

You're it! There was no teasing with Kim!
It's the other Lance!

We hope you like Duck Farts!  Congratulations Kim and Lance

Duck Farts Dominate Stories

At our April 30 meeting, our 2025 Order of the Duck mascots, Dave and Katy, were prepared to crown the 2026 Ducks, but before that happened, members of the Order of the Duck shared their most memorable experiences during their time of service.  Almost every story involved the infamous “PUB Crawl", and a common theme of drinking too many “Duck Farts.”  For those of you who are not familiar with this cocktail, here is its history:

Nine outstanding middle and high school students from the Arlington, Darrington and Lakewood School Districts were recognized April 23 by the Rotary Club of Arlington for making a difference in their respective schools. The Rotarians wanted to recognize students who stand out in different ways in their schools. The Rotary Club also donated $100 to a charity of the student’s choice.

Sunny Sweet from Arlington High School is gifted at languages and is one of the top students in his German language class. He also participates in Knowledge Bowl. “Sunny is unfailingly respectful and has a wonderfully quirky sense of humor,” said AHS German Teacher Ben Mendro. Sunny’s $100 contribution is being made to Oxfam International.

Projects & Other Goals Discussed

Our evening meeting at the Rodeo Lounge was dedicated to hearing reports from committee chairs and directors on our progress toward various goals.  Reporters included Duck Dash-Jennifer Holocker; Membership-Duane Rhodes; Public Relations-Dave Duskin; Service-Chad Hilker; Administration-Kim Deisher-Allen; Youth Services-Mel  Simpson; and International-Barney Peterson.

President Bob Calling on Directors to Report

Most of our strategic plan goals are on target.  Membership Director Duane thanked members for submitting the names of prospective members, but encouraged more suggestions if we are going to hit our goal. Service Project Director Chad reported that we have had many projects and great member participation.  President Bob recapped the funding for the Jensen Park Pump Track and shared plans.Barney discussed the Rotary Foundation's contribution to projects in the Dominican Republic, which were initially lost but later found. The project aims to provide clean water to drought-affected areas, benefiting both drinking water needs and the local economy.  It has helped build a stronger Rotary Club in Dajubon.

Children of the Nations Presentation

Andrea Krook from Children of the Nations shared their mission to raise children who transform nations, highlighting their work in Uganda, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. She recounted the stories of Lucky and Masa, children who overcame adversity through the organization's support.

Interpersonal Communications

Diane Bradford
Diane Bradford's presentation focused on interpersonal communication skills, emphasizing the importance of rapport, body language, and emotional intelligence. She shared techniques for building rapport and memorizing names using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic methods.

W.S.U. EVERETT

Hayley Larson, Director of Development

Instead of the Chancellor or WSU Everett, we heard from Hayley Larson, the Director of Development.  She is a member of the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club.

Hayley indicated that WSU Everett is part of a larger university system with extension sites in all 39 counties. It serves the community through various programs. WSU Everett offers a 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio and undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields, including mechanical, electrical, software, and computer engineering; data analytics; cybersecurity; hospitality; business management; business administration; communications; and organic, sustainable agriculture. It has 250 students and aims to expand to 1,000.
