Here are TO DO's Recommended by Renata Elias - Emergency Planning Officer for the North Shore Emergency Management Office.

Be prepared for a minimum of 72 hrs it is recommended better be ready for a week. You must be self sufficient as in the case of a major

earthquake or catastrophe most things will not be operating and roads could be impassable.

You need to create a plan and have an out of province contact that you can check in with in the event you are not together at the time of the Event.

Emergency Kits can be obtained from the following:

The  Canadian Red Cross  www.redcross.ca : St.John Ambulance - www.sja.ca or retailers list at  www.GetPrepared.ca

Make up an Emergency Kit that would keep you self sufficient for a minimum of 72hrs but preferably a week. This Kit should have the following items:

Water - At least 2 litres per person per day (Small bottles in 24 packs)

Food that will not spoil and does not need cooking.

Manual Can opener

Flashlights and extra batteries.

LED Candles and Laterns all battery operated (Do not use real candles as fire Hazzard) Have Extra Batteries for these.

Radio (Battery operated)

First Aid Kit including Prescription Medications

Cash ( Note bank machines will probably not work also Credit card network) Small bills and change.

Extra set of Car Keys and House Keys.

Plastic Ponchos to protect against rain.

Aluminium Blanket (They keep you warm and require little space)

Your Kit should be kept close to Exit door in House and all family members should know where it is .Also have one in Family Car and at the Office.

Turn off water and Electricity(Make sure everyone knows where the shutoff valves are)To prevent disasters once electricity and water restored.

Unless you smell gas leave gas on. It will require a plumber to reconnect and could be weeks to get done.

BIG HINT STAY CALM- BE PREPARED.
