Tuesday’s keynote speaker was Amelia Foster from Sunshine First Aid. Amelia is an authorized provider with the  Canadian Red Cross and instructs in First Aid.During her presentation she gave us some insight into her background as a paramedic in South Africa and teaching of First Aid for the Red Cross. She reiterated the common refrain that we are hearing from first responders be prepared and have a kit. She recommended a backpack containing water, prescription medicines, a Space blanket and first aid supplies and provisions for 72 hours.

Amelia mentioned that Surrey is one of the better equipped first aid cities with many Defibrillators in civic buildings and Malls.

Another key is to be able to do basic first aid (cuts and breaks etc) knowing CPR is a must and also how to deal with someone choking her phrase ”if it does’t pop they will drop”

If choking is occurring, the Red Cross recommends a "five-and-five" approach to delivering first aid:Give 5 back blows. First, deliver five back blows between the person's shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.Give 5 abdominal thrusts. Perform five abdominal thrusts (also known as the Heimlich maneuver) Alternate between 5 blows and 5 thrusts until the blockage is dislodged.
