Our President Rick - Polar Plunge happened and it looked 'cold'. Well done 'Freezin for a Reason' team

Quite the day on Saturday where more than 1/2 of the club participated in one way or the other in the Polar Plunge in support of Special Olympics. Will write about this event more extensively at week's end.
Thanks go out to the brave souls who plunged, supporting members who cooked and sold hot dogs, others who got and raised the tent, those that gave moral support, and the club members that have helped raise funds so far, and a special thanks to Clayton, who in his shy (not) unassuming (not) way manages to make most of the projects that our club is involved better.
This is the first time we have used our new tent, and it was easily the nicest one there.
There's still time to contribute to this Special Olympics fundraiser.
And thanks Mike for organizing those that cooked the hot dogs for this event.

Bookclub: we had a wonderful group of Bill, Alison, Cleone, Trish, and me [Joan] to discuss the book. “The Family Chao” by Lan Samantha Chang. We were split down the middle with two not having read it, two liked it, and two didn’t like it. An attempt was made to discuss the book with questions that accompanied it, but people seemed disinterested, and just wanted to enjoy the wonderful food. We had an excellent meal of homemade bread, baked brie, shepherds, pie, Caesar salad, and cherry pie. We think discussing the food ahead of time improved the balance, which was excellent.
Next book Next month is “the aviator’s wife” by Melanie Benjamin.
2) Valentines- We have had a very successful year again. With particular thanks to Bill, Gayle , Shannon, Haleh , Monica, Susan, and Peter.
Several schools were involved at the preschool and grades 1 to 3 level as Rotarians spread out, used their imaginations and asked teachers who lived near them to help out.
We received a total of 410 Valentines (with more to come from two retail boxes) and 377 have been given to - Eagle Ridge Manor, InnerVisions , Starfish Program, Food Bank, The Club, Police, Fire Fighters, and Share Family & Community Services- with about 25 left over.
After the meeting, Peter suggested the staff at the rec center and Waves coffee shop (which help us with our meetings). This seems an excellent idea so Joan will give the last Valentines to these groups.

Brian is a great supporter of Belize, not only going there to volunteer for our Grant, but also for the donations he has made to schools in Belize. Brian headed up the West Hill trail project and is always supportive of our Club.
Frank talked about the 50/50 Project Lottery we do at RIBFEST. All 4 clubs in the area participate in the Starfish program and the proposal is to give the proceeds of the 5050 to Starfish Program. Which could support 230 families for food in our area through the schools.
