Al Stjernegaard picked up a $5k cheque for the Belize Basic Education & Literacy project from the Meadow Ridge Rotary club! Great work International team!
Nov.14th Brian Wormhald is off to Belize, doing preliminary needs analysis for this project, and will be back Nov.25th.
Dan Gallant, in the Rotary World Help truck, rode off to Vernon to collect 10 skids of hospital linen donated by the Interior Health Region. This donation was put on a container Saturday, Nov.2nd making it’s way to the Ukraine – this is the 27th shipment since the Russian invasion of Ukraine! Thanks everyone for all your help and a big shout out to Dan!

"My time in Brazil has been great so far! I've made some amazing friends at my new school and my host parents are amazing! Funnily enough, most of my friends are from different cities, and we haven’t had very much time to hangout. The whole class gets along well but my close friends are Maria, Rafaela, and Melissa. (I’ve attached a photo of the 4 of us here!) They’ve helped me a lot with catching up and taking notes for class
I really like my school. It’s very different from Heritage Woods! They have a huge gym building (the roof is so high it’s almost ridiculous), a super nice outdoor area where we go to recess and lunch, and the cafeteria. The cafeteria is my favourite part of the school because they have so many cool Brazilian snacks to eat that I’ve never tried before. Ive somehow managed to develop an addiction to the açai ice cream they serve and it’s only just passed the first month.
I’ve also had a lot of fun at the rotary activities with the rest of the exchange students! We first went to Hopi Hari, a huge amusement park in São Paulo. They had Halloween activities after dark! The haunted houses and the concert were my favourite ones. The other activitiy was a 3 day mandatory trip to Orlândia. All 20 of the exchangers were there and I met people from Germany, India, Taiwan, France, and so many more countries! We got to visit a vintage car museum, a horse stable, an electrical plant, a farm, a pool house and barbecue, and we stayed with temporary host families in the city. My favourite part of the trip was probably the car museum! Though it was so hot I don’t think I was able to fully appreciate walking into a 1930s movie.
My host parents are probably the best people I’ve met here so far! I absolutely love them and they are the sweetest people ever! My host mom is Paula, she speaks super good English and we go out to the mall or to explore the city together! We seem to have a shared love for makeup and clothes. My host dad’s name is Zu. He and my dad are super similar. Only Zu absolutely loves rock music, and I think I’ve heard more about western rock bands from him than any knowledge I picked up from Canada!
My YEO here is also great. She comes with me to rotary meetings for the club and helps me with all the concerns I have. Right now she’s helping me find the documents I need to get approval for my family to visit me during March.
If there was one thing here that I’m struggling with. It would probably be the language. Because everyone speaks English, it’s hard to fully immerse myself or force myself out of my comfort zone to speak Portuguese. I have started lessons with the rotary club now and I’m trying to be diligent with my progress. I’ll keep you updated on my progress!
One other person I’ve been super grateful to as I’ve adjusted to life here is Luciana. Luciana is the exchange student from Peru and she’s 18. Lu also goes to my school and we’re sharing host families. She was there the first day I arrived and has really helped me adjust by going out with me and showing me her favourite places in the city. Her and her friends in senior year have also helped me with my Portuguese!"

Monica Delgado, President Nominee, has a personal request shoutout. Monica’s daughter and hubby is in need of a housing rental. The landlord is selling their rental and have given them a 3 month notice to vacate. Also in the household are 2 children (ages 9 and 17) and one small dog (age 4). Both children and dog are well trained and well behaved. Please email steph19.bc@gmail.com if you can provide housing assistance.
