Pie Day at Eagle Ridge Seniors Home – Danne Dunlop
Thirftys donate pies each month for our Rotary Club to give out to the Seniors at Eagle Ridge Manor. Danne has taken this project on, but we would be grateful if you would like to help. Last week their was a 'Trio singing' at the Manor that was sponsored by PP Paul. He has sponsored 10 weeks of entertainment for the Manor on 'Pie Days'. Guest Speaker: Isabelle Hayer Martinez, Past President Rotary Club of Surrey, Assistant Governor, Rotary District 5050, Area E, District Governor Nominee, and Mortgage Broker.
Isabelle was born in Vancouver, BC and raised on the Sunshine Coast of BC. She holds a Master’s of Leadership degree through Royal Roads University. In 1988 she joined Rotary International and was among the first women to be inducted into the Canadian arm of the organization in 1989. She currently serves as an Assistant Governor for Area E Rotary District 5050 and is an active member of the Rotary Club of Surrey. Guided by the principles of honesty, integrity, goodwill, understanding, and service to others she continues her passion of service to the community by embracing active participation in Rotary and other organizations, such as the BC Cultural Diversity Association.
This morning Isabelle shared with us her story of her Spanish roots and of her grandmother fleeing with her 11 children, from Spain across the Pyrenees Mountains to France, to escape the Spanish Civil War. She also spoke of her parents and their immigration to Canada working at the Residential Schools on the Sunshine Coast, witnessing the heart- breaking suffering and abuse of the aboriginal children. Because of the trauma her grandparents, parents, and she has suffered, Isabelle is a fierce advocate of humanitarian projects and derives excellent satisfaction modeling the way and inspiring others in the community to join forces to improve the lives of those in need.
Isabelle also supports the local and international community through meaningful volunteer projects, including sustainable housing initiatives that help promote individual, family, and community resiliency. She believes that building resiliency is best achieved through addressing vital issues such as housing insecurity, food insecurity, and access to engaging learning opportunities that embrace diversity, equity, inclusion, and peace.
Isabelle believes that the work possible through the vast Rotary network is vital to deliver meaningful impact to the lives of those in need while building resiliency and learning opportunities for those volunteering in their communities. Isabelle invites you to join a Rotary club and become a valued change maker in your local and international community.
